Oof, this is the largest telescope I’ve ever mounted in my observatory. Who needs a gym membership?
I’m custom-rigging this scope to get my most detailed looks at planets and our moon to date. Photos to come!

Why does olive oil work well as a coolant for titanium machining?
Olive oil stops aerospace titanium from literally welding itself to a cutting tool. But it works so well for one surprising reason: it isn't actually a coolant.
Titanium has two distinct physical properties that make it a nightmare on a milling machine or a lathe. First, it has exceptionally low thermal conductivity. When you cut a metal like steel or aluminum, the heat generated by friction transfers into the metal chips that fly off the workpiece. When you cut titanium, the heat has nowhere to go. It concentrates almost entirely at the tip of the cutting tool, superheating the edge.
Second, titanium is highly chemically reactive at elevated temperatures. As the cutting edge gets hot, the workpiece binds to the tool in a destructive process called galling. Once the metal sticks, the tool's geometry changes, friction skyrockets, and the tool snaps or burns up entirely.

Moonlight reflected off the Amazon river. At the proper angles in our orbit, we aboard @Space_Station can see brief silvery flashes atop water surfaces, illuminating even the darkest places on Earth.

I love my feed today.
The FMS70 Ducted Power Single-Axis UAV is an open-source, experimental vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) drone designed to mimic the physics and controls of a reusable rocket booster. Unlike traditional quadcopters that use multiple independent rotors for stability, this craft relies on a single central propulsion unit, making it a popular DIY challenge for testing advanced control theory.

The first of 33 missions ✅
Space shuttle Atlantis completed its very first mission on Oct 7, 1985. Over its 25+ years of service, Atlantis launched interplanetary probes, flew the final servicing mission for the Hubble Space Telescope, helped build the International Space Station, and much, much more.

Operating safely in space requires knowing where satellites and objects are – and where they will be in the future. This requires all operators sharing their satellites’ ephemeris data, along with predicted trajectories and planned maneuvers → space-safety.com
Constant communication is what makes autonomy like this safe. Early contact lets us take maneuvering responsibility, publish ephemeris faster than ground radar can catalog the object, and deorbit and keep commanding through demise if needed
We treat early communications as a requirement, not a nice-to-have
