Home ownership is the fastest way to build wealth. Buy a starter home, ride the home value increase, then get a bigger home.
What kind of nonsense to rent for 30 years? How do the children feel moving from one rental to another?
David Friedberg explains that owning a home is worse than investing in stocks
Calls it the "Great lie"
FRIEDBERG: "This is one of the great lies. Convincing everyone that the great American dream is to own a house. When owning a house for a lot of Americans ends up putting all your capital in one asset, and you've got to basically get the price of housing to go up every year to keep everyone moving up the ladder."
"So now, fast forward 30, 40, 50 years, young people can't afford to buy a house anymore because we've pushed the asset value up so much to try and make sure that everyone's got good household wealth."
BARTLETT: "We are told. I mean, that's the sort of central idea once you leave university—is to figure out how quickly you can get a mortgage or buy a house."
FRIEDBERG: "Great lie. It's one of the great lies. And there's a lot of countries where people have been able to accumulate capital and jump that ravine from labor to capital much more quickly when they don't buy a house because they can invest in stuff. They can buy, you know, the S&P 500, which you can just buy on an E-Trade or Robinhood account, and you can just own it; on average, it will make you 10-11% a year. You just put your money in that, you're making 10-11% a year, and it can go up every year, and you don't have to pay taxes. You don't have to pay property tax. You don't have to pay insurance. You don't have to deal with repairs and maintenance. All that sort of stuff. So, a lot of people would have been better off, depending on the markets that they're in. There's some markets that ballooned, but a lot of people would have been better off over the last 30 years actually owning the S&P 500 than owning their home and paying for the rent on a home."
Okay
I’m a retired brain surgeon and I wanna tell you why you feel like life is passing by. I just need one minute to explain this to you so hang in there.
Repetitive daily routines stop the brain from recording clear detailed memories. When every day looks the same, your brain does not track time the same as a clock does. It tracks change. If nothing new happens then days, months, and years start to blur together.
This is know as Time compression. When life lacks variety, your brain compresses past days together, making it feel like time is sped up.
To stop feeling like life is passing you by, add new experiences to your life. Break routine habits, like changing your daily home routine, taking a different route to work, or trying a new hobby.
Schedule small trips or plan new adventures so your days do not blend together.
Practice mindfulness by staying fully focused on what you are doing right now and not trying to race off to the next task.
Keep a journal and write down happy memories or memorable parts of the day before you go to sleep.
Take deep, calm breaths when you feel anxious or rushed to return your focus to the moment.
You can and you will retrain your brain to not feel like life is passing you by by following these few simple measures.
Simplification is devine
I agree with Peter Thiel on everything.
Many other Chinese who never heard of Peter Thiel would also agree on everything.
It's actually just common sense.
It's just that he always finds the most creepy, elitist, pompous & pretentious way to say mundane shit:
Normal person:
"Maybe it’s better to make something unique than fight 50 identical competitors."
Peter Thiel:
"Competition is the ideology of cattle. The superior founder creates a monopoly and exits the mimetic blood-pit."
Normal person:
"It would be nice if medicine helped us live longer."
Peter Thiel:
"Death is an engineering defect. Nature has issued a challenge. I intend to appeal the human expiration date."
Normal person:
"Successful people usually have a plan."
Peter Thiel:
"Indefinite optimism is spiritual surrender. The future does not arrive. It is seized by men with definite plans."

Andrew, you are wrong here.
Good headline but NYC is two standard deviations behind SF. China is way closer to SF.
- researchers
- vision (neo lab, robotics, ai for x)
- pure talent per quota
I have lived long enough in NYC (20+ years) to know this. I went to high school, college and worked here.
My dad worked at a hedgefund, big tech and led eng teams at startups like Zodoc.
I have been to probably 100+ cocktail parties in NYC with investors, angels etc.
I mean it when I say it.
SF is WAY, WAY ahead of NYC.
By the time news hits NYC, its history in SF.
In SF you can be a average or below average among high tech circle;
But the information you get will be better than thos who are the most tapped in NYC.
Remember, how Travis Kalanick coined VCs in a recent viral podcast clip called “do no harm.”
His main point was: you have “chess enthusiasts” and you have “professional players.”
I would NOT compare the NFL fan to Brady or the NBA fan to Captain Clutch (Jalen Brunson).
Yes NYC has AI labs, but its more GTM than research. Anthropic, OAI, XAI, SSI, and others are not paying $100MN salaries for them to be in NYC.
They want their “Ronaldos” to live at the epicenter of the world… which is San Francisco.
To your other point:
“Every major industry lives NYC.”
NYC is a market, not the factory. Designed in SF, made to implement in NYC (via FDE.)
Think Harvey. Think Together AI. Think Glean.
***
I will concede. NYC is more active place to live with food, skyline views etc
NYC has better dating, better intellectual diversity.
But that is why SF is special. It helps you lock in. Also people in SF move way faster.
This is because SF serves as a filter function to many founders,
while NYC servers as an exit function to many who often felt deprived in smaller cities and now want to “live life.”
Nothing wrong with wanting to live life but lets not compare apples to oranges here.
That's therapy!
Chamath says there's no such thing as failure, because no one is actually thinking about you
"There is no failure. That is what other people think of you to keep you down."
"If you were left on an island and it happened, you would just brush it off and move on. It's everybody else that you think is judging you."
"But here's the secret: they don't give a fuck about you. They are living their own lives."
"So it's your perception of what they think of you. There is no failure. There is do and learn, do and learn, do and learn."
