Tomorrow morning, the WMATA Board will be briefed with the latest update on the Blue-Orange-Silver Corridor Study, four years in the making. Over the past month, I have analyzed which proposal is best suited to address the system's capacity needs:

Fascinating update! The Metrorail Forecast Model predicted 37,968 paid trips at 🟢Navy Yard-Ballpark station this past Saturday. It looks like the actual ridership blew this estimate out of the water! Looking forward to the full data release in two days 👀🔜
Last Saturday at Navy Yard was busy with two huge events: @TheSavBananas Banana Bowl at @NationalsPark and @USWNT vs. Spain at @AudiField. ⚾️⚽️ Navy Yard station saw more than 53,000 trips, leading to the 7th busiest Saturday there since 2020.

Concerts at the Verizon Center is one of the parameters within the Metrorail Ridership Model! On evenings with concerts, systemwide ridership increases by 6.14% compared to an otherwise identical day. 🔴🟢🟡Gallery Place station experiences a 30.8% increase during concerts!
Last week, ridership hit a high note! 🎶 Over six days, concertgoers made more than 30,000 trips through Gallery Place station to see legendary performances by @jonasbrothers, @charli_xcx, @weezer, and more, proving once again that Metro is the best way to get to world-class entertainment! 🎤✨

Great to see a new ridership record at NoMA! Not too surprising given continued growth in the neighborhood.

🚨New Ridership Record🚨
On Thursday, September 24, 2026, 🔴NoMa-Gallaudet U recorded 16,258 tapped entries, setting a new daily record! This surpasses the prior record of 15,744 set on 3/31/2026. Ridership at NoMa vindicates the forward-looking investment in an infill station!

4 stations set post-pandemic records!
🟢Anacostia: 6,385 (prior record of 6,309 on 8/26/26)
🔵⚪️Benning Rd: 2,561 (prior record of 2,456 on 6/4/26)
🟢Naylor Rd: 1,738 (prior record of 1,734 on 4/24/25)
🔴Silver Spring: 9,015 (prior record of 8,904 on 6/3/26)
Quite the lofty projection for today — school’s back in session, Nationals at home, beautiful weather and a busy convention downtown. I think the Model is probably overestimating, but the pieces are there for a busy day on Metrorail
As anticipated, the actual ridership did not quite meet the projection, but still ended up being a very busy day on Metrorail! Two stations (🔵⚪️Downtown Largo & 🔴Takoma) set post-pandemic ridership records!

Very impressive! Typically October is the busiest month for Metrorail, so hopefully this is just the start of an exciting autumn to come 👀🤞

🔵⚪️Downtown Largo had 3,953 recorded tapped entries. This sets a post-pandemic record, breaking the previous amount of 3,819, set on 6/18/25. Also, 🔴Takoma recorded 5,819 tapped entries. This also sets a post-pandemic record, breaking the previous amount of 5,747 set on 6/3/26.

It’s week one for the @Commanders! According to the Metrorail Ridership Model, a home Commanders game will increase systemwide Metrorail ridership by 5.15% from an otherwise identical day. 🔵⚪️Morgan Blvd station experiences an 11.45x ridership increase on gamedays! #RaiseHail
Tough day for the forecast. The Friday before a federal holiday always depresses ridership (which isn’t accounted for by the model). I wonder if it would be worth adding a parameter in a future revision to capture this impact (either something generic, or specific to Labor Day)

The V2 Metrorail Ridership Model launched on August 1, 2026. With a full month under its belt, here are some statistics of its performance 🧵👇:
Today is the first weekday following the conclusion of the Red Line Summer Construction. The V2 Model was quite accurate during the closure, but I am intrigued to see if that continues under “normal” conditions. Stay tuned 👀

Here is an interactive dashboard via Google Sheets (apologies, I am not particularly tech-savvy):

Real intrigued to see how today's prediction turns out: lots of events in Washington (National Book Festival, college soccer at Audi Field) but the real question mark is the Indycar race. My model projects that it will produce 110k trips, unclear what impact it will actually have
Honestly things were pretty close. Only 5% error for an event that had no precedent whatsoever! I’ll take it!
Very cool to see the Metrorail Ridership Model work this well!
Fascinating to see these numbers from @WMATA! My model projected that the My Chemical Romance concert would produce 29k trips, Foo Fighters would produce 25k trips and Luke Bryan/Jason Aldean would produce 25k. Not too bad! Will await the full data release next week 🙂👀
With the figures for Monday, August 17th released (Foo Fighters concert), the V2 forecast had its best performance yet! Hoping similar success for the two concerts later last week 👀
I am quite perplexed by the numbers from WMATA for last Wednesday. Typically, Weds are the busiest day of the week, yet this was about 80k less than the day prior. Weather was nice, no major delays, and there was a home Nats game. Wonder if the data is incomplete — or just August
Looks like my intuition was correct — the numbers for Wednesday, Aug 12th were revised upwards by 80k. Unsure why the initial figures were incomplete, but glad to see some redemption for my model.
