The State Department’s human rights reports began after the US helped overthrow Allende and install Pinochet in Chile. It turn out Americans weren't crazy about installing dictators under the guise of fighting communism. Congress agreed. The reports were supposed to tie US weapons to a government’s treatment of its own people. A country that abused its citizens was not supposed to keep getting security assistance. @AnnelleSheline worked on those reports at the State Department before she resigned over Gaza. She tells us why she left, how she ended up there in the first place, and what is happening in Yemen right now. The latest Always at War: youtube.com/watch?v=1esK1HBE…

Latest on Heidi Levine: broken rib, four broken vertebrae, her finger was nearly cut off, multiple potential stabbing wounds. Surgery first thing in the morning.
Heidi is going to be okay, but her injuries are significantly worse than initially thought. It appears that she may have been stabbed. She’s getting ready for surgery.

Francis Fukuyama on living in California in the 1980s: "To this young, single male in his late twenties, California thus seemed rather like a land of unlimited possibilities, sexual and otherwise. It was not, however, one that I was able to take much advantage of. Or at least, not to the extent that my Bulgarian colleague Alex Alexiev did. Like me, he worked on Soviet projects at Rand. I went hiking and skiing with him and his fellow Bulgarian friend Simon in the Sierra Nevadas, and admired his ability to attract women. Alex hated Communism, and would later return to Bulgaria to launch a political career after Bulgaria transitioned to elections in the early 1990s."

This video captures settlers beating Heidi. They clubbed her, kicked her. Pulled her up off the ground to beat her more. Robbed her of all her equipment. If she didn’t have a helmet—and if she was Palestinian—she could be dead.

To be clear, the only reason I was able to reach Heidi was because young Palestinians provided cover with rocks against machine-gun- and tear-gas-wielding settlers and soldiers. It’s those kids, not the settler terrorists, who the IDF was hunting after the attack.
This is @infinite_jaz rushing to help Heidi under fire from Israeli settlers slings

Another good piece on Larry David and an argument for subsidizing the arts via @thenation @dbessner: thenation.com/article/cultur…
For Larry David, the 1980s began with so much promise. After years of rejection — from women, from employers, from audiences seeking laughter — it seemed that Larry’s luck had finally changed. Following a nationwide talent search, he had been selected as one of nine young comics to star on ABC’s new late-night sketch show, 'Fridays.' This was it, the proverbial big break. And one with such promise that Larry was even willing to leave his native New York for L.A. Well … as it turned out, Larry’s big break didn’t quite go according to plan. And four years later, he was back in New York with less confidence than when he had left. Nevertheless, he soon managed to secure another great late-night opportunity — this time as a writer for the tenth season of 'Saturday Night Live.' And because Larry is Larry (and therefore governed by a peculiar physics that dictates that every step forward be followed by two in reverse), his year at 'SNL' would prove to be far from a rosy adventure. Read the story about how Larry David quit, then un-quit, then never returned to 'SNL again: nymag.visitlink.me/zPYa4L

If you would enjoy Norman Finklestein going on the most Norman Finklestein riff ever about his intellectual development, recommend recent @AmPrestigePod interview, w/@dbessner & @dwdavison along for the ride. They had to break it up for a Part 2, natch.

Tl;dr he cobbled together every quote you’ve already heard used in a GOP attack ad because Hasan canceled an interview with him. Chait is probably one of contemporary DC’s laziest columnists, which puts him in the running for laziest human beings of all-time.

As I prepared for the interview by researching his commentary, I realized that Piker is right to complain that the handful of frequently repeated controversial statements fail to accurately represent his worldview. In fact, it’s much worse than those quotes suggest. theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1…
