Folks sharing the new tesla flying car stunt questioning the purpose of usefulness of the stunt is peak irony. It's marketing and you talking about it means it worked amazingly well...

Couldn't find an app launcher I was happy with, so I wrote one in Zig + Qt and gave it 65 themes. I have successfully replaced choosing a launcher with choosing a theme. Anyway, it's called Zenkai. Linux, macOS and Windows. zenkai-launcher.netlify.app/

Also named it after Dragon Ball, because apparently writing my own launcher wasn't enough evidence that I should be supervised. The story, screenshots and questionable levels of enthusiasm: dayvster.com/blog/zenkai-a-z…

The Lua plugin support in zenkai was supposed to be the small feature. plugins.zig is 26KB, where I expected a fraction of that. That's what happened the one time I said a project would be small.

We got faster processors, more memory and SSDs. Then opening a folder took longer than it did in 2005. On the trade we made and called progress: dayvster.com/blog/we-put-a-b…

We didn't get faster computers so we could wait more. We got faster computers so we could stop waiting.

Odd timing with epic vibe coding their launcher to run a whole 40ms faster on Linux. I wrote about how we should expect a lot more from our desktop software in terms of speed. The 40ms is frankly pathetic compared to the capabilities of our hardware. dayvster.com/blog/we-put-a-b…

Go + QT is kinda amazing to develop in.

I really didn't want to write this post. The Linux community already has enough people telling newcomers they're doing it wrong. I didn't want to be another one of them. But my problem with Omarchy is exactly what made me fall in love with Arch in the first place. dayvster.com/blog/my-problem…

I’ve always hated the joke that developers just copy from Stack Overflow until the errors go away. Now it’s an argument for why AI can replace us. Let AI write the code. Somebody still needs to understand what we’ve built. dayvster.com/blog/we-were-no…

I built an app launcher in Zig + Qt. It's called zenkai. ~20ms startup, fuzzy search, 65+ themes, Lua plugins, cross-platform, and a frankly unreasonable amount of time spent making it feel nice. Wrote about how I built it: dayvster.com/blog/zenkai-a-z…

I want more useless software made by people having fun.

Somewhere along the way "works offline" went from obvious to a premium feature.

I miss software that had absolutely no idea who I was.

I don't hate modern software. I hate that we have computers from the fucking future and somehow made opening a text editor slower.
74
I don't want smarter software. I want software that opens instantly, does the fucking thing, saves my file and leaves me alone. Apparently this is a radical position now.

Peak omarchy experience Open source funding model: the guy who maintained the thing for 8 years gets a thank-you. The guy who wrapped it in a landing page gets a Series A.

Zig is what happens when someone looks at C and says "keep the speed, lose the footguns" without inventing a new religion. Looking at you rust.
