After Biden imploded in the 2024 debate, I asked Trump surrogates: Who'll be the Dem nominee? The unified answer was: Biden, it's too late to replace him. And within days the Heritage Foundation was (idly) threatening legal action if Dems dumped Biden. We now know this was because they knew Biden was toast, and Harris or another nominee was an X-factor.
The current CW, as Dems melt down in Maine, is: Well, Collins is in great shape now, race is over.
But remember the CW of a week ago. Chatter that Rs had dynamite on Platner but would wait until after July 13 deadline to release it. The implication: Rs wanted a weakened Platner to run against.
So could Maine Dems come out of this polycrisis with a new nominee who wins?
(Also, Collins beating all comers for decades, then losing to an 11th hour replacement Dem, would be the stupidest ending to a career. And we should never rule out stupid.)

Brian Nicholson, running mate for Republican-endorsed candidate for governor Kendall Qualls, was on the Capitol grounds during the Jan. 6 attack on Congress.
He says he left after things turned violent but that clashes with video and photo from the day.
