Our latest @OffCSPod gave me the opportunity to actually read through Edmund White's THE JOY OF GAY SEX from cover to cover. And it's...really good! Some of the illustrations are beautiful and hot, the writing is creative, and it's smart about gay politics and culture.

NEW EPISODE: We're kicking off a new (occasional) series on Gay Therapy Slop, and we're getting started with what is probably the best gay self-help book of all time: THE JOY OF GAY SEX (1977).

The first gay president, alas
Trump on Jon Husted: "I don't do this with men very often. I started examining his body because I didn't know he was a great athlete. And I looked and I watched up and down. I looked at his ass and I looked at the whole... And then I looked at his hands. Look at his hands. He's got these claws."

"Has gay liberation made the straight intellectual the new nerd? Once, the typical nerd was the faggot sissy, to be mocked and bullied; now the typical nerd is Norman Podhoretz." -- Ethan Mordden, 1986

Our latest episode of @OffCSPod looks at Harvey Milk's brand of pragmatic populism and how Randy Shilts interpreted it as an alternative both to Democratic Party insiderism and to ineffectual gay left posturing. christopherstreetmag.com/gay…

Our new episode of @OffCSPod is actually a collab with @dan_oppenheimer, so in the spirit of his show we try to map out the state of gay intellectual life, where today's gay writers are located, what's missing, and what we're trying to do with the pod.

fun fact: Derrida wasnt even supposed to be at the 1966 Johns Hopkins conference. He was working as a janitor on campus and would enter classrooms off hours to put various words under erasure. Rene Girard noticed this and encouraged Derrida to invent poststructuralism that night

Hard to think of a better advertisement for fascism than telling people GLP-1 drugs are fascist
🚨 Da’Shaun L. Harrison at Socialism 2026 argues that the political deployment of GLP-1 drugs is “fascistic” because they exist in “a world fixated on genociding fat people.” “The political deployment of GLP-1s is fascistic, not because individuals take them, but because the conditions under which they become necessary are shaped by a world fixated on genociding fat people.” And to explain why that is supposedly fascistic, Harrison turns to Frantz Fanon and “Black flesh under colonial surveillance.” If GLP-1s are already “body fascism,” the dual and triple agonists are going to require an entirely new theoretical vocabulary.

The more I think about it the weirder it seems to be that Giovanni's Room is *the* gay novel. It's beautifully written, of course, and portrays the self-deception of the closet, but there is far less for a modern gay man to connect to in it than in writers like Holleran or White.

Also weird to me how often A Little Life is proffered as a modern gay classic. A context-less novel about incidentally gay characters written by a woman is not a gay novel!

Just did the final export of next week’s long @OffCSPod episode on Dancer from the Dance. Have been looking forward to this one since we started in March!

My favorite part may be talking about Dancer as a novel of gossip and how gossip is the essential gay social practice, what holds the web of the gay social world together.
