Nice article. Reading Safranskis Heidegger book, I had the impression, that Heidegger wanted to become the leading philosopher against the "mythical jew" representing modernism and ontological separation. But this was rejected by Amt Rosenberg, what peeved him.
This piece was developed over a long time. Appreciate that it has now appeared in @haaretzcom and hope that it adds a necessary dose of self-accounting to what it means to be Jewish in America – in the past, present, and future.

David Stromberg explores his bond with Israel in relation to that of the writer Jean Améry. Like Améry, he feels alienated by aspects of Israeli politics. Unlike Améry, however, Stromberg’s bond with Israel is that of an Israeli and not of a Diaspora Jew. ‘I can relate to the ineffable nature of this connection – to the sense that something that can’t be put into words but that can be experienced in extremely powerful ways binds you to this country.’ fathomjournal.org/jean-amery…
Written in November 2024. Published in March 2026. Meantime, another war, and more aftermath. Thanks due to @theamscho for publishing the piece.

This was not a simple piece to put out there. The title is provocative—but the piece is more measured. I know the word-combination may put some people off—it may fuel prejudice—but fear of prejudice should not stop us from discussing our own darkness.

"THIS WILL BE OUR FINAL VICTORY! This is the slogan under which politicians have always marched while perpetrating their slaughter."

It's not just about right and wrong. It's about realizing that what you don't agree with is no less real than what you believe is true. We have to understand what this proliferation truths means – even if we believe other people's truths are false.

In my grad translation seminar, one of our topics is how we talk about translation, how we write about it, and how it is reviewed. Last week we looked at a wide array of reviews, and this insightful piece by @davidscribbler was brought to my attention.
