What. A. Match. 🇦🇷⚽️ Cape Verde 🇨🇻 pushed Argentina to the absolute limit before Argentina survived 3–2 in extra time. As an Argentine, my heart was racing. As a football fan, nothing but respect for Cape Verde. They earned the admiration of the world tonight. This is why we love the beautiful game. 🌍❤️ #WorldCup2026 #Argentina #CapeVerde #Football #Soccer #FIFAWorldCup #Vamos

More evidence the Chinese football reforms I helped design, in 2010 and again in 2016, are showing results. China’s U17s qualified for the FIFA U-17 World Cup this year for the first time in 21 years. Today, China faces South Korea in the Asian Games semifinal, their first men’s football semifinal since 1998, 28 years ago. The tournament is essentially U23. The reforms centered on individual technical skill development. Grassroots work rarely gets much attention, but I saw the effort firsthand: after helping design the strategy, I led a 60-city government advocacy tour and helped create a 120-part technical skills series broadcast on CETV and distributed to 50,000 schools. That work matters. We’re seeing signs of a turning point. Can China beat Korea today and reach the final? If Japan also wins, could we see another China–Japan final?

FDNY members, New Yorkers and thousands of visitors participated in the Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk on Sunday in New York City. The annual event is held in memory of FDNY Firefighter Stephen Siller and his final steps from the foot of the Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers and pays homage to all those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. We will Never Forget.

Great insights @benno_nagel
I’ve spent the last decade raising capital for professional soccer startups, with some success. One challenge comes up in nearly every conversation: what is the path to profitability? The pitch often rests on building a valuable long-term asset, developing a venue or surrounding real estate, and getting the club as close to break-even as possible. That can work, but it narrows the investor pool to people with patience, an appetite for risk, and a real passion for the sport. What if the club itself could make money? Clubs like Annapolis Blues have shown how much demand there can be for a compelling soccer experience below the fully professional level. They’ve built a strong identity and brought people through the gates without taking on the same expense structure as a professional club. And most importantly, they are profitable. Highly profitable in fact. As I explore where to build next, I’m open to starting at the pre-professional level (although pro remains the ultimate goal). It would take the right market, venue, operators, and ownership group. But the investment thesis is different: build a club people love, run it with financial discipline, and give it room to grow. That possibility deserves a serious look.

The Netherlands has become the first country in the world to successfully eliminate stray dogs, ensuring that every dog has a home. This remarkable achievement stems from a combination of strict animal welfare laws, large-scale spaying and neutering programs, and a strong culture of responsible pet ownership. The Dutch government has long supported widespread sterilization initiatives and enforces tough penalties for animal abuse and abandonment. While an estimated 200 million stray dogs exist worldwide, the Netherlands stands out as a global leader. In Dutch cities, it is common to see dogs riding in bicycle baskets, relaxing under café tables, and even joining their owners on public transport, a reflection of how deeply integrated pets are into everyday life. The country now serves as an inspiring model for animal welfare, demonstrating how coordinated policy, cultural awareness, and compassion can effectively solve a challenge that continues to affect many other nations.

Nike signed Messi when he was 14. They lost him over a few hundred dollars worth of tracksuits, a mistake now estimated at $10 billion in brand value. In 2005, Messi's father Jorge asked Nike for some extra tracksuits for his son, a routine request from the family of an 18-year-old who had just broken into Barcelona's first team. Nike's Iberian and South American offices both ignored it. He never got a reply. Adidas was paying attention. They offered around $1 million a year, and Nike refused to match because they didn't want a bidding war over a teenager. They were busy building their 2006 World Cup campaign around established stars. Once the Adidas deal leaked, Nike panicked and sued in Spanish court, claiming a binding contract. The judges found all Nike had was a "commitment letter" with no legal weight. Messi signed with Adidas in February 2006, and in 2017 they gave him a lifetime deal. So when he walks out at El Monumental on October 6 for his final Argentina match, in front of 84,000 people, the gold-lettered farewell jersey he revealed today will carry three stripes. Twenty years, 125 international goals, a World Cup, and every shirt sold along the way. All of it went to Adidas because someone at Nike didn't answer an email about tracksuits.
