I’m excited to see my work on how place shapes health outcomes featured in AEA chart of the week
Your choice of where to live affects more than personal finances and lifestyle—it can actually have an impact on your long-term health, say @TDeryugina and @davidmolitor in today's #ChartOfTheWeek aeaweb.org/research/charts/k…

US drinking water pollution fell more than half from 2003 to 2019; Safe Drinking Water Act loans helped, older Americans' health improved.

Does cleaning up drinking water save lives?
New paper: We link US federal drinking water investments to Medicare records and find they reduce mortality among older Americans, with benefit/cost ratio >20.

How do you measure drinking water pollution in America?
Turns out: with a lot of FOIA requests.
Our new working paper assembles a national database of U.S. drinking water pollution concentrations.
Here's what it took 🧵

9/ Caveats:
We measure mortality for ages 65+; effects on younger ages are imprecise in county data that is not linked to specific systems.
We don't observe cause of death in Medicare.
Benefits likely extend beyond mortality. Our estimates are probably a lower bound.
10/ Bottom line: Federal drinking water investments pass a cost-benefit test by a wide margin.
This is useful to know as policymakers debate infrastructure spending.

A straight reject denies the authors a second chance, which may matter especially for authors from less resourced places. A revise-and-resubmit gives expectations that may be too high. From what I see, roughly 50% of reject-and-resubmits convert.
