Milton Friedman said something in 1978 that would get him canceled twice on X today. "Consumers do not create inflation. Producers do not create inflation. Inflation is produced solely by excessive public spending and by excessive money creation by the government, and by nothing else." His argument was simple. Nobody outside government owns a printing press. Businesses can raise prices, workers can demand raises, oil producers can hike costs, but none of that spreads through the entire economy unless the money supply grows fast enough to pay for it. A price spike in one sector is just prices shifting around. Sustained inflation across everything only happens when there's more money chasing the same output, and only one institution controls how much money exists. Half a century later, economists still argue about how much blame belongs to supply shocks versus the printing press. Friedman never said supply shocks don't matter. He said they don't explain why prices keep climbing everywhere, every year, without stopping.
