Here's an interview with me on ABC Radio National about my new book, "Charles Todd's Magnificent Obsession: the epic race to connect Australia to the world". Thanks @AllenAndUnwin

As an author of several books in this genre, I can confidently say that 'podcasts' are not the problem.
"Dad books" — which this article, and some publishing insiders, use to describe "serious nonfiction" books across biography, current affairs and business and economics — are reportedly in a free fall, with sales declining every year for the last few years
“The trend couldn’t be clearer,” said Jonathan Karp, the former chief executive of Simon & Schuster and publisher of the new Simon Six imprint.
“When we have internal meetings to talk about this problem, it always comes around to podcasts,” said Jonathan Burnham, president and publisher of the Harper Group at HarperCollins Publishers.
The market for these books is older men, and they are not being replaced by younger men, who aren’t readers. Young men aren't choosing between reading and podcasts; reading isn't even on the menu. It's not part of their cultural world.

In 2005, we built a robot that could talk like Philip K. Dick.
It won “Robot of the Year.”
Then its head got lost on a flight to Google HQ.
20 years later, I’m reflecting on what that strange, brilliant project taught me about curiosity and courage in AI.

My book Radio Girl (2020) is the biography of this remarkable woman. I’m glad that she is being honoured in this terrific song. Great work Daniel.
Recorded the song I wrote five years ago for Florence Violet McKenzie, OBE at the plaque set up for her in 2023 in Campbell, ACT. @Australian_Navy #WRANS @AWMemorial @abcnews @daviddufty

The Chicago Sun-Times published an upcoming summer books list that is obviously AI. The clues are that there is no byline and at least 8 of these titles do not exist.
We saw The Count of Monte Cristo (2024) at the local French Film Festival tonight. Every seat in the cinema was taken. It was magnificent.

Reading about the insane numbers of books that ordinary working people used to read a hundred years ago feels like seeing pictures of the Pacific Ocean back when it teemed with whales. Hard to comprehend what we’ve lost.

my first book, How to Build an Android (2012) is in the books3 database - it's part of the AI training set. I wasn't asked...

when you think about it, it’s pretty cool that they invented software engineering as a way to monetize being smart
It's admittedly impressive that AI can create any kind of video content, but none of these AI-made videos make sense. They are also absurdly formulaic and cliche (while not making any sense).
I'm pleased to announce that a new edition of my award-winning 2017 nonfiction book "The Secret Code Breakers of Central Bureau", about Australian code-breaking activities in the 2nd world war, is now available in paperback. booktopia.com.au/the-secret-…
