🙏 @BelenCalvoEU for addressing the #atdf this week! Very much agree that economic integration in Africa is built on the success of Regional Economic Communities and the #AfCFTA
In an early morning discussion today at #ATDF2024 the @EUinRW Ambassador to Rwanda @BelenCalvoEU shared insights on how regional collaborations can grow and thrive, drawing on the #EuropeanUnion’s own journey toward integration. She emphasised the EU's commitment to unlocking economic opportunities through partnerships not just within the EU but also in #Africa seeing it as a shared pathe.
@BelenCalvoEU touched on the transformative impact of digitalisation, explaining how, for example it has reshaped how countries within the EU trade with each other. She shared how by defining a Digital Single Market, the EU has tackled issues such as secure financial flows and robust data protection—elements she described as the "lifeblood" of digitalisation of trade effort; and which provide lessons for other REC's.
Emphasizing that these digital strides are not just technical achievements but that they are important in supporting the ease of doing business, like through electronic contracts. These innovations, could offer valuable lessons for Africa’s own regional integration efforts, painting a picture of a more connected and economically vibrant continent. The British Deputy High Commissioner to Kenya, Leigh Stubblefield, has committed to continue partnering with Kenya Ports Authority to boost maritime trade and improve port efficiency.
The envoy, who was on a tour of the Port of Mombasa, acknowledged the significant progress attained including infrastructure upgrades when she held an engagement session with the MD Capt. William Ruto.
Captain Ruto, noted that the port of Mombasa has emerged as a vital trade hub in the region, sharing insights on port's performance, including the steady increase in cargo throughput. He attributed this growth to ongoing infrastructure expansion, digitalization efforts, and upgraded facilities.
The MD also expressed his appreciation for the partnership with @TradeMarkAfrica noting that KPA is dedicated to implementing the Green Port Policy and providing shore power to ships for environmental sustainability.
GM Cargo Operations, Dr. Sudi Mwasinago, and @TradeMarkAfrica Deputy CEO Allen Asiimwe attended the meeting.

This Afternoon, I reaffirmed the Ministry’s partnership with TradeMark East Africa to strengthen efforts in creating an enabling environment for business and exports as we embark on undertaking business reforms.
As I hosted TradeMark Africa’s delegation led by the CEO, Dave Beer, I commended the organization’s ongoing support in promoting key value chains, particularly in mango, avocado, and horticulture exports.
Through collaborative projects, TradeMark Africa is driving initiatives aimed at enhancing market access for these high-potential sectors. We look forward to continued joint ventures that will empower MSMEs to tap into established bilateral trade markets, creating more opportunities for local producers and increasing Kenya’s export capacity.
