When hiring, most of your practices to ensure hiring no one bad also ensure you can’t hire anyone who is fantastic. E.g. requiring a college degree. Or a certain numbers of years of experience. Or dumb brain teasers. Every low pass filter is also a high pass filter.

I was 37 when I started YC. It changed my company and my life. I’m sharing that because a lot of founders quietly think they missed their window. Too old, too settled, should’ve done it at 25. You haven’t missed it. The experience you think makes you late is often what lets you build.

Every boring thing they talked about was something I want.
Awesome to see Apple being Apple. Creating seamless UI experiences that are totally obvious only after you see them.

One side says the bad guys are the immigrants. The other says it’s the billionaires. Both ideas just as idiotic with the slightest bit of scrutiny. But boy do they play well with their base. Watch out for anyone who tells you your neighbor is the enemy.
AOC: “There’s a certain level of wealth and accumulation that is unearned. You can’t earn a billion dollars. You just can’t earn that. You can get market power, you can break rules, you can abuse labor laws, you can pay people less than what they’re worth, but you can’t earn that”

The gap between what’s reported and how good AI actually is right now is astounding.

Totally with Garry here. I'm 58 and still building stuff at 2am. I was similarly obsessed when building for the early web in the 1990s. But this is way more fun.
I came back to code because AI made it possible for me to build at a level I couldn't before. I'm not coding despite being CEO of YC. I'm coding because this is the most important technological shift since the internet and I'd be an idiot to experience it from the bleachers. I'm 45, running the most important startup institution in the world, and I can ship production software at 2am. That's not a distraction from the job. That is the job understood correctly.

this is excellent >GitLab founder diagnosed with rare cancer (osteosarcoma) >standard care works but cancer comes back later >medical team says there's not much else to do >"It became my own job to keep myself alive. Nobody else was going to do it for me at this point" >starts researching, assembles his own medical team, uses AI for deep research >“I’ll talk to anyone, I’ll go anywhere, and I can be there anytime" to collect information >does as many diagnostic tests as he can find as often as he can (maximal diagnostics) >develops his own therapeutic ladder with repurposed drugs, personalized medicine, etc >Sid’s cancer currently in remission

When I was consulting for @HBO Silicon Valley, zero-loss compression was the holy grail Richard Hendricks chases that perfect middle-out algo could shrink everything w/out breaking a single bit. Google just did something even more practical for the AI era: TurboQuant compresses LLM key-value caches down to 3 bits per value using random orthogonal rotation + PolarQuant scalar quantization & optional 1-bit QJL residual correction. =>> 6× memory reduction, up to 8× faster attention (on H100), & 0 degradation on LongBench, Needle-in-a-Haystack, and RULER for models like Gemma. No retraining, no calibration needed. Fiction just got out-engineered by reality. 😅💚💚
