My son is refereeing local Auckland rugby, because he loves the game. The newbies wear a jersey that says "FIRST YEAR REFEREE". Last week he looked after an under 15s outer suburban high school game. Abused by ADULT coaches, including one who crossed the sideline (illegal) and walked over to the kicking tee to abuse him. It was all he thought about all week. Do they want kids to referee? And what example is being set to the players here? Grow up people.

New blog from me. A plea to understand Wigan on its own terms rather than viewing it merely as an extension of somewhere else.
Andy Burnham is running to be MP in the Makerfield constituency in the town of Wigan. This just happens to be where I grew up. So I decided to write about my home-town and what makes it slightly different. open.substack.com/pub/postli…

Our Pub of the Season for Spring 2024 is The Delph Tavern at Tontine, between Orrell and Up Holland. This is a great real ale pub for the local community and for visitors alike, and this award is greatly deserved. All the best to all involved from all at Wigan CAMRA

An emotional Denis Healey recalls his experiences during the Second World War, including his response to the (outrageous) allegation that those fighting in Italy, as he was, were ‘D-Day dodgers’. ‘I’m sorry, you see, there it goes! I’m afraid I get too moved by these things…’

As a Bradfordian I’d like to offer Lee Anderson a charity boxing match. All proceeds to a charity of his choice. Let’s make this happen twitter
"Is anybody from Bradford? Would you want to get there quicker?" Lee Anderson MP makes a joke when asked about the impact cancelling HS2 could have on local rail services - like those between Leeds and Bradford.

The Sefton Arms. A GBG pub. The only St Helens pub to be named checked in English literature. By @ajlees in his brilliant book, 'Brazil that never was'. Read it and find out what connects St Helens, Brazil, Percy Fawcett and Theosophy.
