Prioritizing vaccinations by risk of mortality and morbidity is both efficient and equitable. Thread. xitter.cf/ZoeMcLaren/status/1345…
Many people are advocating for giving up on vaccination prioritization. Some have suggested a 1st-come-1st-serve vaccination program would be better. This is misguided. Prioritizing vaccinations by risk of mortality/morbidity is both efficient and equitable. Let me explain. 1/7

I have long admired @timnitGebru for her brilliance, moral courage, clear voice in speaking up for what is right, & influential scholarship. It is truly terrible that Google would do this. In this thread, I want to share some of Timnit's work I love xitter.cf/timnitGebru/status/133…
I was fired by @JeffDean for my email to Brain women and Allies. My corp account has been cutoff. So I've been immediately fired :-)

We (epi & biostat folks) have a major conflict of interest when it comes to evaluating COVID research that I’m not sure we’ve fully acknowledged. 1/

So everyone is talking about UNC's COVID-19 mess - and all that criticism is perfectly valid. But we also need to talk about why the uni-administration probably had no choice. Buckle up and let's talk about university finances and the 4 horsemen of the academipocalypse. 1/lots?

IMO, depth in only one thing (ex: deep learning) doesn't matter too much. I think good science and thoughtfulness are much more important. The goal at a startup isn't to be a solo 10x engineer/scientist. It's to be a good team player and build a technical culture that lasts.

Two additional observations on skeptical ML practitioners: (1) They have not been taught that, mathematically, causal models are NECESSARY for certain tasks, and (2) They have not been taught how to USE causal models even if they were handed one. (1) + (2) drives ML skepticism.

One thing I missed in "The Book of Why" was on how causal models come to be. Most of the discussion in the book already assumed some kind of model/diagram. Many "curve-fitting" ML practitioners I talked to struggle especially on this part and are therefore skeptical about it.

The Bias-Variance Trade-Off & "DOUBLE DESCENT" 🧵 Remember the bias-variance trade-off? It says that models perform well for an "intermediate level of flexibility". You've seen the picture of the U-shape test error curve. We try to hit the "sweet spot" of flexibility. 1/🧵

A Nature article ucla.in/31F1C8k reports a breakthrough in medical diagnosis. While most ML enthusiasts are busy mining raw data, a British team has taken counterfactuals seriously (do-calculus, probability of causation, twin networks, noisy-OR) with impressive results.
