I think the primary issue is people using their credentials as a means of arguing from a position of authority. The “I have a Ph.D and you do not, therefore I’m right” rather than the “here’s my argument supported by this evidence, let’s discuss and find the truth.” In short, credentialism is bad, critical thinking is good. Don’t claim something is impossible unless it’s either self-evident or you do your own diligence. Credentialism is often conflated with academia where it is prolific, but it’s also present in other sectors too. The “I was a leader in a fortune 500 company for 20 years, therefore I how to run a deep tech startup better than you.” Just because you succeed in one arena doesn’t mean those skills are fit for purpose elsewhere without some adaptation / revision. We need to encourage evidence-based critical thinking across the board since that’s the only way to understand reality and what it can do. And that applies no matter where you’re working or what letters you may have after your name.

It’s clear that most students are missing the point of school. It’s not to get everything right on exams, it’s to learn how to think critically. An education system that overly “teaches to a test” is reinforcing this mistaken mindset about school as well. Learning how to think is the most adaptive and scalable skillset you should develop in school, and it’s not something you can or should outsource to AI. Why? It is the skillset that allows you to be the prime mover on new knowledge creation, and to diligence content from other people, whether in the form of posts, papers, books, talks, debates or LLM outputs. This issue predated LLMs but has become more pronounced in recent years. It’s easier to cheat using them, especially with the shift to take home exams during / after Covid. Nearly all of my exams in school were in-person, now speaking with students it seems in-person tests are an exception not the rule. Yes, in-person exams without access to any tools is not how work typically is in the real world. But again, the point of school is not to get everything right on an exam, it’s to demonstrate your ability to think and work through problems yourself. That’s why in-person testing is best in most cases to quantify your progress in developing this critically important ability. I argue that we should return to more in-person exams again. But that doesn’t address the root of the problem, which is orienting education towards the correct purpose. The point of school is to learn how to think critically, and this is not something that you can or should try to outsource to an LLM or anything or anyone else. It’s what makes you human and importantly individual capable of rigorous thought. With this skillset fully developed, humans can use amazing tools like LLMs to augment our abilities to scales previously impossible.

We certainly can debate on the best way to introduce people to markets and investing, but it certainly needs to be done. I’m genuinely floored by how many I know who have no investments besides cash because the market is just “gambling”. Such huge missed opportunities.
