One of the bigger trends across X-sphere is AI driven omnipotence - I can solve for everything all by myself -- giving way to I will solve for everything all by myself. This leads to a software for one mindset. I do not like this feature in this software - I will make one myself. I want this extra feature in this software _ I will make one for myself. I think this product is expensive - let me reverse engineer and make one . And from App Store to Product Hunt to Reddit to.. is a graveyard of ideas -because owning distribution is tough. Being disciplined about distribution is tougher. Headlines suggest a story. Summaries tell you what happened. But unless you read the book, you really don't know how to write one yourself.
Where does this take me? To the office culture where there were BIC pens everywhere, and people lost respect for the honorable pen? :) To Wall-E where the consumption patterns created a junkyard of humanity proportions?
This sent me on a trip. And I wrote- amitdas.substack.com/p/the-l… - as is often the case, my interests were AI and Fintech investments

a16z's Olivia Moore on the untapped category in consumer AI: most people aren't looking to save time, they're looking for ways to spend it.
"We talked about this in the report, in terms of areas where we have not yet seen AI-native startups pop up."
"@ekuyda, one of our portfolio CEOs, runs a company called Wabi. She has this great quote, I'm probably going to botch it, but it's something like: 'Most people aren't looking to save time, they're looking for ways to spend their time.'"
"This is why social media, entertainment, Netflix, TikTok, YouTube are the most used consumer products we have."
"Much of what we've seen in AI so far is: how do I do this thing a little bit faster? A little bit easier? A little bit more impressively? And that's not an incredibly compelling daily or hourly active value proposition for most people."

The seventh edition of our Top 100 Consumer AI Apps is here, including a new dimension this time: what consumers are actually paying for.
a16z's Elena Burger sits down with Olivia Moore and Josh Elman to unpack the current state of consumer AI:
The data reveals a striking power-user economy. Only a small share of consumers currently pay for AI, but among those who do, spending is heavily concentrated at the top. Olivia and Josh discuss why developers, creators, and other power users dominate spending today, and why subscriptions may not be the business model that ultimately brings consumer AI to everyone.
They also dig into the rise of personal agents, the different trajectories of ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, how ads could reshape AI economics, and the enormous amount of consumer white space still left to build, from shopping and entertainment to social, dating, and marketplaces.

One of the joys of being alive right now - I turned this into a macbook application for myself in 2 hours. I am sure I will find bugs along the way - but hey - why did you build it? because you could! :)
For years, maybe a decade, I've wanted to build a writing tool that just did a few things I couldn't find anywhere else.
A system that mimicked how I think when I write. A system that provided clear affordances, features, and places to do the things I wanted to do. A way to play with my writing as I'm writing it. A way to settle into just the right way to say something.
It never made sense to make it a 37signals product because it's not commercially viable, nor would it be worth pulling people off their other work to hack on this. Plus, it would have taken months the old way.
So this weekend I just made it myself, with Claude's help.
It's called Write_On and the short video walks you through it.
Essentially it's "alternative control" at the word, sentence, and paragraph level, plus a way to dim stuff back, and stash stuff near by. Not version control, but alternative control. You'll see what I mean when you watch the video below.
So here it is. Write_On.
