Associate Professor at Michigan State University. Investigating problematic social media use and web3.

I’m thrilled to publish a new commentary in @Nature on a question that continues to generate more controversy than clarity: is social media addictive? In the piece, I make three main arguments, which I describe below:

3. The APA needs to get involved. In the US, formal clinical recognition depends on the APA and the DSM, so the organization should engage with the current evidence and help determine whether maladaptive social media use qualifies as an addictive disorder.

New commentary by Dar Meshi, associate professor in the Department of @MSUAdPR, explains that smartphones are not inherently addictive; they are tools that deliver rewards. The concern isn’t the phone itself but how people engage with those rewards. spr.ly/6180h3tms

I was interviewed by @Nature about "social media addiction." Bottom line, we need more research.
Is social media addictive to young people? A jury in California is being asked to decide — even though the question still divides researchers go.nature.com/4bSk6rJ

.@MSUComArtSci's @darmeshi argues that the idea of "smartphone addiction" is flawed. He can discuss addictive disorders, reward systems and smartphone use — and effective ways to examine their effects.

Did you know that smartphone addiction isn't real? In this new article with Jens Binder, we argue that it's like saying someone with alcohol use disorder has "bottle and glass disorder." The smartphone is just the delivery vehicle, not the actual problematic reward! Link below:

Thrilled to be selected as part of the first group of @DeSciWorld fellows! Decentralized blockchains can assist research, for example with funding, data collection, data analysis, and publishing. Excited to take this year to explore the field and collaborate with my cohort!
Say hello to the first DeSciWorld Fellows 💚 From neuroscience to cultural systems, they’re exploring what decentralized knowledge can become ↓
