There are always glimmers in Shadi Hamid's writings of a decent thinker, both intellectually and morally. His new book looks promising in that regard.
And then you get this utter folly and inanity.
It took Shadi a long, long time to find his voice on Iran, and when he did, it wasn't about Iran. It was only about Israel.
But that's not the bad part. The bad part is this odd notion that it's hypocritical for Israelis to hope that Iranians free themselves of a regime that tyrannizes them - a regime that has spent vast treasure and lives on tyrannizing, you know, us too.
I watched Iranian missiles fly in the sky over my head. My children slept in a bomb shelter for 12 nights, and have had to think about war and danger since October 7.
I watched Iran fund the demolition of Lebanon's state capacity via Hezbollah, enable Assad's massacre 600,000 of his own people (he would have fallen early in the civil war but for Iran), and learned over the past two years just how much Iran was involved in planning and funding both Hamas generally and October 7 specifically.
Gaza would not now be demolished without Iran's machinations - a point that remains true regardless of how evil you believe the Israelis to be.
I support Iranians' freedom from tyrants who would murder my children too, and I support Palestinian freedom from the grip of ideologies that will never do anything but lock in another round of the same endless war.
And that's deemed hypocrisy by the brahmins of the American left.
While Shadi, his voice now rediscovered, is no hypocrite at all for finally siding with Iranian freedom -- sorry, with kinda almost agreeing that in principle it's not entirely wrong to side with Iranian freedom as long as we make it about Israel.
What a broken mental world they live in.
Several things can be true at once. First, that the Iranian regime has been brutal towards protesters and has forfeited its sovereignty. The fall of the regime would be a good thing for Iran and the region and we should all hope that outcome comes about.
At the same time, it's bizarre to see pro-Israel hardliners celebrate Iranian protestors and lament the loss of life when they've had no interest in the human rights of Palestinians and have backed Israel's brutal assault on Gazans and our own American ideals of the right to life.
Few of those pro-Israel voices have spoken out about the human rights of, say, Saudis, Egyptians, or other groups that have had to live under dictatorship. Why? Because those regimes are friendly towards Israel. So they don't count apparently. The hypocrisy is so brazen that it takes my breath away. They simply don't care about Arab or Muslim lives. What they care about is Israel's uncontested dominance in the region and its ability to subjugate anyone and any nation that disagrees with it.
Complete silence from @AnitaAnandMP and PM @MarkJCarney on the bombing of a hospital in Israel. Unlike when @melaniejoly immediately condemned Israel for the false accusation that Israel had attacked a hospital in Gaza.
So the new finance minister is the same as the old finance minister in that he doesn't understand basic economics. Or math. Just because you call it "investment" doesn't mean it doesn't require CASH to pay for it. Where is that going to come from?

What most people don't realize about Israel being at war, is how much of its innovation economy was called up for reserve duty.
CEOs, CTOs, VPs of Sales, etc.
Dropped everything & went to serve.
That's 1 of the secret ingredients for Israel's success as the "Startup Nation".
Where else in the world do your startup leaders have this kind of real life leadership experience making life/death decisions.

Great opportunity to join OurCrowd in Toronto! Check out the position: Investor Operations Associate comeet.com/jobs/ourcrowd/D3.… #ourcrowd via @ComeetCo
You are economically incompetent. This will increase demand while supply remains inelastic. As any first year economics student can explain, this will INCREASE the prices of homes.
"Highlights" from Abbas' speech in Turkey. Just a reminder that this is the man with whom @melaniejoly and @YaaraSaks thought it would be good to hold hands.

The difference between successful & unsuccessful startup founders:
An unrelenting drive to succeed.
You will also pay FAR MORE in interest payments in the long term. Oh also, It seems that you and your Finance Minister don't understand basic economics. Increasing DEMAND will drive UP home prices. Not make them more affordable. SMH
And here is some basic math for you Minister @cafreeland. A $700k mortgage (assuming 25% down on a $1M home, 5% interest) w/ 25 yr amort = $4,400/mth vs 30 yr $4,000/mth. BUT total interest paid is $133K HIGHER over the 30 years!
Do you not understand the most basic principles of economics? My daughter has taken 1 economics class & understands that increasing demand doesn't make homes more affordable, increasing SUPPLY does! How are you the Finance Minister?!?

How come the Pro-Hamas encampment requires a court injunction to be removed but an actual @UofT JEWISH student is told to leave immediately or he will be arrested?!

Thanks @HilzFuld !! We are so proud of Ben for his running and more importantly for how he represents the Jewish people!!
Who wants some good news? How about some good news that will also give you that fuzzy feeling inside?
I gotchu.
A few days ago, I met with an old friend in Toronto. @dapshore, who is a partner at OurCrowd and has been a friend for a long time. He also has great taste in cars (He also drives a Polestar!). 🚗
Anyway… We met in Toronto and just caught up on everything that’s going on.
David mentioned in passing that his 24 year old kid, Ben, who is doing a Masters at the University of Toronto in Organic Chemistry, is an athlete who had previously won 3 medals at the Macabbiah, and will be running the Sporting Life 10k race in Toronto in a few days.
Well, a few days have passed and David just sent me these photos!
Ben won. First place.
He ran 10k in a whopping 29:46. I’m sorry, that’s just insane.
For those who, like me, are mathematically challenged, that means that Ben ran over 20 km/h for 30 minutes straight!
15,000 ran, he came in first place!
But wait, that’s not the coolest part!
Not only did he win, but when he crossed that finished line, he represented his people!!!
That, right there, is a loud and proud Jew! In a city jam-packed with antisemitism, Ben not only wore his Magen David on his shorts, but he proudly displayed it as he kicked some serious tuchus!
Not all heroes wear capes. Some wear Marathon uniforms!
Congrats, Ben. Congrats David for raising a legend!
