In October 2025, a Solana event in Shenzhen was interrupted by police. Organisers said overcrowding was the problem. Chinese lawyer Liu Honglin wrote about it afterwards, including the importance of coordinating with local authorities, understanding venue restrictions and preparing for possible intervention. A year later, Solana runs a major publicity campaign in China, including putting its logo on a skyscraper in Shanghai. The Shanghai event is postponed on the morning it’s due to start. Lily Liu says registrations quadrupled overnight, exceeding the attendance limit registered with local authorities. Hangzhou and Shenzhen have since been postponed too, with organisers again citing excessive registrations and local venue requirements. The same lawyer now says his latest article about Solana in Shanghai has been deleted following complaints. I don’t know whether wider regulatory issues were involved. Maybe the capacity explanation is entirely true. But given what happened last year, how has the same problem apparently happened again, this time across multiple cities? I think the Solana Foundation owes the Chinese community a proper explanation. What were the permitted capacities at each venue? How many people were approved to attend? What exactly did the local authorities tell the organisers, and when? These are the details that would help establish whether the explanation holds up. Instead, we’re being told how successful the publicity was, with registrations quadrupling, as though that somehow explains the disruption. People have spent time and money travelling to these events, only to have their plans disrupted. I think it’s pretty insulting to those people to try and turn this into a marketing success without first taking responsibility for what went wrong. The Foundation should be explaining how this happened again, not celebrating how much attention it managed to attract.
