'I would be glad to have a debate about Ukraine in parliament, in which both sides were for once fairly represented, but there is none. Dissent is dismissed as treachery. Parliament, the BBC and almost all the print media are deserts of conformity on this topic.' spectator.com/article/genera…

I'm glad they're taking steps but "watch videos quietly" is an unbelievably terrible form of messaging.
I can already see how this goes:
- "Can you use headphones please?"
- "No, I'm watching videos quietly like the sign says"
- "But I can hear it, it's annoying"
- "I don't care, it's quiet"
Genuinely can't believe they've fumbled this so badly. It's an official acceptance that antisocial behaviour is ok, and therefore could actually be worse than the current situation.
It should say 'don't play videos out loud', that's much clearer and better.
Serious countries don’t have generals issuing policy
Questionable how receptive junior ranks are to this kind of stuff

Like quite a few on here I thought this photo op was ill judged. The soldiers are unarmed and look like they were turned out in a hurry (in what sense is this an ‘honour guard’?). Theme park Britain

An unusual sight in Millau 🇫🇷: French Foreign Legionnaires in uniform queue outside a local cinema to watch the first part of the French blockbuster "De Gaulle", depicting General de Gaulle and the Free French Forces during WWII.
The legionnaires belong to the @Cdc_13eDBLE, an unit that fought at the Battle of Bir Hakeim against German and Italian forces in 1942, a key engagement featured in the movie.

Very good essay, on a topic that is now a live political issue, in which British political commentators seem to flaunt their total misapprehension of basic terminology

Europe isn’t ready for Russia, by Wolfgang Munchau (@eurobriefing)
The battlefield perspective of history critically underestimates the importance of supply chains. The stories of Europe’s wars are understood much better in terms of logistics than in tales of battle.
And nothing has changed. One of the consequences of the Iran war is the fluctuating cost of crude oil. But that is only part of the story. As the Ukraine war has led to critical shortages of diesel and kerosene on global markets, the price of European diesel has gone through the roof.
In a display of his classic short-termism, Donald Trump suggested that the US should stop supplying Europeans with diesel. He almost certainly did not think this through. If the US were to carry out his plan, Europe would suffer an immediate supply emergency. And we need only look at the vast number of diesel-powered lorries on European motorways to realise how critically reliant we are on the fuel. The economy would grind to a halt. It might be a smart idea if our leaders addressed that situation before heading into battle with the Russians.

"Baltic politicians, who for many years criticized W. Europe for being soft on Russia, now find themselves in the strange position of telling some Western leaders to calm down [...], fearing that talk of an imminent invasion could prove damaging to their societies & economies."
Not healthy how normal it’s become to declare anything deviating from a very narrow party line on Ukraine a conspiracy
Given the media visibility of the "author" in recent days, it's too obvious now: "Iuliia Mendel" is an influence operation aimed at undermining Western support for Ukraine.
The Spectator's editor-in-chief is Michael Gove, who is known for his anti-EU stances and close connections to US conservative circles (read: MAGA). This reinforces my suspicion of MAGA's primary involvement in Operation Mendel.

Bismarck famously once said 'if the world end I shall move to Mecklenburg, because everything happens there fifty years later', every time you hear of some truly diehard BRD supersoldier he/she is always from there.

I have a strange and inexplicable soft spot for Ben Gvir, who must be the most Levantine man in the entire Levant. Had the cards fallen slightly differently in the 20th century, it’s easy to imagine him as an enthusiastic Ba’athist, threatening Saddam’s enemies.
