The desert between Libya and Sudan has become a critical logistics corridor for the Rapid Support Forces, the paramilitary that mutinied against Sudan's military in 2023. This report documents a network of camps in Libya enabling the RSF's war effort. sudanwarmonitor.com/p/inside…

Rubio told reporters today that Sudan came up in talks with UAE. "It always comes up." "We'll raise it again tomorrow, because the Saudis will be there tomorrow. We want to see a ceasefire" and humanitarian corridor
Boulos’s father Massad is leading US efforts for a ceasefire in Sudan. Massad recently spoke with the UAE-backed RSF warning them off an assault on El Obeid. Not clear if Rubio and Boulos Jr raised this with UAE though.

As the military situation escalates in Sudan’s western Kordofan region, it’s worth noting that numerous Sudanese army units are sitting idly far from the front, including the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 11th, 12th, and 17th infantry divisions. For SAF, the *appearance* of fighting and winning a war is more important than actually fighting and winning it. The military-led Sovereignty Council, which took power in a coup in 2021, depends on the perpetuation of armed conflict as the source of its legitimacy. It only acted with urgency when it needed to recapture the national capital, Khartoum. The 19th Division at Merowe is marginally involved along the North Darfur/Northern State frontier, but it hasn’t brought serious manpower into the fight either. The 9th Airborne, which played a key role in the fight for Omdurman, is nowhere to be seen. Logistical constraints may explain this in part: frontline cities and towns can only host so many soldiers, fuel is expensive, etc. But does that explain the *total* absence of these underutilized formations from the combat zones? This leads me to different explanations: questions of politics, military doctrine, command rivalries, etc. Meanwhile, SAF-aligned paramilitaries (Al-Baraa Bin Malik, Sudan Shield, Joint Force) grow larger and larger, and carry out a growing share of frontline combat operations.

Why have warplanes targeted traditional gold miners along the Sudan-Egypt border? Neither the Egyptian nor the Sudanese military authorities have issued a statement to explain why, according to local miners, airstrikes on 16 and 20 June targeted the North Valley area along the Sudan-Egypt border. Residents and survivors of the attacks report that the airstrikes have left dozens dead and countless others wounded. One local miner told Ayin that Egyptian forces had been carrying out repeated campaigns in the area over the past months to remove the miners. Suspiciously, the Sudanese military and joint forces withdrew from the area on 15 June, just a day before the first airstrike. #Sudan, #KeepEyesOnSudan @SudanTribune_EN @AyinSudan

Over the weekend in North Kordofan, a likely SAF drone hit a market in RSF territory, while an RSF drone bombed a fuel station in the army-held state capital, El Obeid. The air war is hitting civilians on both sides of the front line. sudanwarmonitor.com/p/drone-…

Sudan's army is rewarding RSF defectors, while imprisoning and killing civilians they deem as "collaborators" based on flimsy intel. The double standard has reinforced perceptions that Sudan's war is a war on civilians. #Sudan My story for @truthout truthout.org/articles/in-sud…

An argument I'm seeing is that the Strait of Hormuz is a "diminishing asset" for Iran, as the war is likely to incentivize regional states to develop alternative transit routes to reduce dependence on the Hormuz choke point. It's true that alternative routes are likely (and a good idea! I've written about it), but arguing that this reduces Iran's potential leverage obscures the fact that any and all alternatives to Hormuz will lie within range of Iranian missiles and drones. Hormuz is not Iran's only source of leverage in these negotiations. Its credible threat to lay waste to regional energy infrastructure if attacked is just as potent, and just as problematic.

"The Iranian negotiation style is generally known in the world as the ‘bazaar style,’ which means continuous and tireless bargaining,” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi wrote in his 2025 diplomatic memoir. “This method is a process of interaction that requires great patience and time,” and thus, “he who gets tired and bored quickly will lose.” theatlantic.com/internationa…
I spoke to President Trump on the phone last hour about the end of negotiations with the Iranians. He told me: “I don’t care if they’re over, honestly. I really don’t care. I couldn’t care less. If they’re over, they’re over. If they’re not, you know, I think they took too much time. Frankly, I thought they started to get very boring.” cnbc.com/2026/06/01/trump-ir…

The timestamps indicate that this destruction occurred after the RSF had been driven out of Khartoum, so it appears this neighborhood was deliberately demolished by Sudanese authorities. The heavily damaged intelligence service HQ and SAF General Command adjoin this area.
Updated satellite imagery from March 2026 of Sudan's Khartoum on Google Earth shows impact of the widespread war on the country. For example, this destruction seen in the area near Khartoum Airport. Location: 15.59743, 32.54336

The shifting descriptions of what’s in the deal make me suspect that the U.S. and Iran are further from agreement than tonight’s excitement on social media would suggest.
