You won’t always find the perfect lies on the golf course. When that happens, you might want to learn this shot…

I’ve taken thousands of photos of the Tavistock Short Game Area @WoburnGC and this one I took today might be my favourite!
It’s so important to be able to generate both height and spin from a bunker. With only one or the other, it’s impossible to get the ball close to the pin and increase our chances of saving par.
Here’s a video of Rick Shiels making a few small changes to drastically improve both!
If you’ve ever hit a chip shot that rolls out too much or too little, the issue might be as simple as having the wrong club in your hand.
In this video, I explain how to select the right club every time, in just 10 minutes!

As you all know, my short game isn’t the strongest… 😉
Luckily, I know a guy - @dangrieve
He’s a short game wizard and I had to see if he could help fix me once and for all 🤔

BUNKER SHOT MASTERY
Here we have 1991 Masters champion Ian Woosnam playing bunker shots with an 8 iron!
This is actually great practice for everyone who wants to generate more height and spin! To play this shot, you need to:
1️⃣ Stand farther from the ball
2️⃣ Squat downwards and lower the hands
3️⃣ Release the club a lot through impact (Release 3!)
I recently gave tour professional Tom Lewis a short game lesson.
Coaching these players is great, the speed at which they can adjust and change ball flights and spin rates is incredible!

The sun has set on an amazing Captain-Pro Challenge season @WoburnGC.
Congratulations to Captain Nick Wilson on a brilliant and special year with the club’s 50th Anniversary.
We played some good golf between us and had a decent record.
Thanks to everyone who took us on and the kind donations to Nick’s charity.

56 Degree Release 1
This shot requires real golfing IG as the first part of the green is uphill, then it changes to downhill and left to right towards the pin. If I was to play this shot with a mid iron, I would easily get up the slope, but like have too much speed for the downslope.
Turning down the loft on a 56 degree means that the ball will have the pace to get to the top of the slope, but the extra spin will prevent it from running too far on the other side.
This is a great shot to learn and will easily put you in the top 1% of short game players in the world. Next time you find yourself in a scenario with multiple slopes, think of this video!
THIN SHOTS ⚠️
When playing from a firm downslope, it’s very easy for the club to ‘kick’ off the ground and produce a thin. Here, we made sure we delivered the club in a way that helps you gain the height and spin needed to attack difficult pins.
.
ADJUSTMENTS
The changes we made were:
1️⃣ Move the ball position slightly back of centre
2️⃣ Keep the clubhead low in the follow-through

( ACCURACY 🎯 ) Bunker Play
The #release3 bunker shot is one of the most fun shots to play. It produces a higher ball flight with incredible spin, allowing you to stop the ball dead on the green and access tight pins. To play this shot well, there are a few key basics we need to nail down…
.
SET-UP AND SWING
To play the perfect shot, we improved the following:
1️⃣ Set-up wider and square to the target
2️⃣ Place 70% of your weight on the lead side
3️⃣ Rotate fully through to the target 🎯
.
