Canada paid every penny of the multi-billion-dollar construction (US contributed $0 to the bridge itself). Tolls go to repay Canada over 30 years. The US stood to gain significant trade efficiency, economic growth, job support & infrastructure improvements at the most critical US-Canada freight gateway without having to put up construction capital!!
What changed? Major Trump donor Matthew Moroun (whose family owns the competing private Ambassador Bridge) visits WH to whine about family loss of the toll revenue monopoly and Trump almost immediately called for a delay & fucked every contract partner.

We aren’t just getting your smoke, you have let your fires burn across the border.
Minnesota wildfires continue to burn, with the Bear Trap Fire in the BWCA now 34,422 acres, crossing into Ontario Canada. The other fire that crossed into Canada is the Thumb Fire, now 15,300+ acres.
Smokey conditions moderated fire activity a bit, but it also kept aircraft from engaging the fires. The Little Knife Fire burned into Minnesota from Canada and is 30,000 acres. The Sioux Fire is pushing 11,000 acres, and the Camp Fire outside Ely is 4,200 acres. There is a lot of fire on the ground, and resources continue to arrive to assist in suppression actions.
