A few late night stakeouts and five hundred mosquito bites later please enjoy my story on Colleen Bell, the DelCo dog detective who’s spent the past decade and a half finding the Philadelphia area’s hardest to catch lost dogs. inquirer.com/news/philadelph…

I’ve been a little bit obsessed with the Betsy Ross reenactors in Philly since I moved here in February. So I reached out to one to see if there was anything interesting going on at The Betsy Ross House coming up. Turns out, there was! inquirer.com/history/betsy-r…

Philly is still clinging to 6th place in population among the biggest U.S. cities, with a slim 26,000-resident edge over San Antonio. That lead was 360,000 in 2000. How has San Antonio caught up? Through annexing more land. Story by @danamunro2. inquirer.com/news/philadelph…

I’m at The School District of Philadelphia building this afternoon as the Board of Education votes on whether to approve the superintendent’s plan to shut down 17 schools partly to save money on building maintenance. Follow this thread for updates 🧵

Those watching the meeting from the overflow room booed at board member Joan Stern as she passed through. Stern signaled she would vote in favor of the plan moments before.

Tensions boiled over toward the end of the meeting as two more board members signaled yes votes. Those in the overflow room chanted “shut it down.”

About a dozen police officers rolled their bikes into the building at around 4:15 p.m. as things started to get rowdy in the meeting. Yells and jeers caused the board to recess for 15 minutes.

A little bit of lighter news today. This car in Philly went viral after it got encased in ice following a nearby water main break. It’s now on Google Maps as a city tourist attraction. inquirer.com/news/philadelph…

A lot of dreams died today. Many of the people who taught me most of what I know about journalism lost their jobs today at the @washingtonpost. Brilliant editors, reporters, designers, mentors and friends. I don’t think this industry will ever be quite the same again.

I spoke to teachers, property managers and former car salesmen who were upset by the removal of the slavery exhibit at the President’s House in Philadelphia. They all had the same idea: fill the disemboweled exhibit with public art. inquirer.com/news/philadelph…

Since I learned my beloved @postlocal was among the desks facing deep, existential cuts, I've felt immense resolve to fight for my brilliant colleagues and the public service we provide. There is no @washingtonpost without robust coverage of Washington. @JeffBezos: #SaveThePost

On New Year’s Eve I had my last day at The Washington Post. It’s still hard to wrap my mind around. 🧵

I’ll explain what’s next for me soon but I just wanted to take a moment to thank every reader and every source that welcomed me into their home, their world, their heartbreak and pain, their laughter and excitement, their confusion and anxiety.
