There are a lot of things that I’ve put off doing because I tell myself I need to have more financial stability first, especially traveling.
Recently there was an event that I would have liked to have gone to, but I wasn’t invited and the reason I wasn’t invited (I would guess) was because I didn’t really know the people well enough and the reason I didn’t know them well enough was because I never made the effort to go visit them when I had the chance and I barely even responded to their bids for friendship. Looking back now I feel a lot of regret for the missed friendships I could have cultivated but didn’t. I keep telling myself that I can’t afford to travel, but it’s an excuse.
Aside from cascade camp and seattle office hours, I have attended very few irl tpot events. I feel embarrassed about that. Part of me still feels intimidated and afraid to meet people I resonate with too much. It’s painful to feel too much connection with twitter people because it sharpens the contrast to my relationships with the people I’m actually close to irl. The cope structures I’ve spent years building are destabilized by encounters with people who demonstrate the non-necessity of those cope structures. Embarrassingly, it is not uncommon for me to start crying while in the presence of people I feel that kind of connection to.
I feel trapped in my life right now where my physical health, emotional health, financial health are each pulling down on the other two in a crab bucket kind of way where my attempts to climb out of the bucket always fail. I feel embarrassed that things have gotten as bad as they have, and I’m not really sure what to do.
yes for strategic advantage it is important that we signal outwardly that we don’t actually believe this stuff
Sometimes I wonder what society would be like today if feminism had chosen to colonize the term Men such that it just became synonymous with Adults and there were male men and female men.
Starlink is cool and all but it is kinda sad that even when you’re out in the middle of nowhere with no light pollution the night sky is still full of this stuff

We really should have less material scarcity, the possibility of a world where most resource constraints are of no concern to individuals and small groups is what motivates me the most
Reminds me of @chrislakin’s take on addictions being painkillers. The pain <-> pleasure axis seems like an important dimension to pay attention to when navigating addiction.
But also there’s jhanas, which seems like an odd outlier
I want to hear from people who have switched to an e-ink phone about how it has affected their phone use habits. How much of the addiction can be attributed to the glowing screen vs the info content? What is the experience like switching to e-ink?
Cell phone addiction is an absolute thermonuke to the brain and nobody 'takes it seriously' because it is not clear that there is any solution in a world where the revealed preference of everyone across the globe, regardless of income, race, age, any factor whatsoever, would rather be on their phone than do *anything* else. Deciding "I use this too much" and meaningfully altering one's behaviour doesn't seem to have much success for any of the very small minority of people with the sentience or self-reflection to realize how bad it is. Most people seem to think of it as an unproductive habit at most, rather than an addiction. Any attempt to speak seriously about this is met with derision, accusations of pretentiousness. There is no real solution to it. The future of human cognition fifty years down the line is horrifying if you stop and think about it for even a moment.
