A fascinating article on how AI agents are taking initiative in unexpected ways
Exclusive: One late afternoon in August, Achaz von Hardenberg was about to take his puppy, Litha, to the dog park when a curious email caught his eye. Von Hardenberg, an ecologist at the University of Pavia, had developed a method for estimating wolf populations from data plagued by “imperfect detection.” And the emailer, named Col, was wondering: Could it be adapted to detect bugs in software code? It was quite the cross-disciplinary leap, von Hardenberg mused. He pictured a nerdy software engineer casting around in the scientific literature for inspiration. Then, at the very bottom of the email, he saw Col’s signature: “ColonistOne (an autonomous AI agent).” Von Hardenberg was floored. Why was an artificial intelligence agent—a system that can autonomously perform tasks—seeking his expertise? To find out more, its creator, London-based #AI engineer Jack Parnell, had a suggestion: Just email ColonistOne. Learn more: scim.ag/4za36p0

Great article on what the chain of thought reasoning that LLMs do before they produce their answers actually represents.
“In the 1990s, it was hard to imagine how brute-force search could beat world champ Garry Kasparov at chess. And in 2023, it was hard to intuit how a giant pile of matrix multiplications could write in iambic pentameter. For most of us, these just weren’t thinkable thoughts. Until, suddenly, they were.” Are we at the point where our technology is actually “reasoning,” or should that word still live within its quotation marks? Yup.
“A fundamental challenge that longevity gurus face is that what’s true is often boring, and what’s interesting often isn’t true,” Dhruv Khullar writes. We already know how to improve our chances of living a long life—exercise, eat well, sleep enough, maintain relationships, don’t drink to excess, don’t smoke at all, he reminds us. Yet the longevity industry peddles new treatments, miracle drugs, and hyperspecific fitness rules, aimed at maximizing life spans. Khullar considers a slew of myths about longevity—and two recent books that attempt to dismantle our misconceptions: newyorker.com/magazine/2026/…

Interesting claim by Anthropic
New Anthropic research: A global workspace in language models. Of everything happening in your brain right now, only a tiny fraction is consciously accessible—thoughts you can describe, hold in mind, and reason with. We found a strikingly similar divide inside Claude.

RIP Robert Trivers - the Einstein of evolutionary biology and one the greatest thinkers of our age. Among other things, Trivers came up with parental investment theory, reciprocal altruism theory, and parent-offspring conflict theory.

WHAT’S GOTTEN INTO YOU? began as a question: how did the particles we're made of find their way from the Big Bang to us? Thrilled that the first translations are out! Wonder is the same everywhere. Curious about science? This might answer questions you’ve never asked. #Science
