Here, Jessica L. Jeane and I reflect on the impacts of the proposed increase on university endowments. We address broader policy questions (getting money to students in need) and the need for #highered to rebuild the trust it has lost with the public bit.ly/43NRsSF
Thoughtful piece on a complex subject. Thanks @JessicaEBlake for listening to colleagues, surfacing diverse perspectives, and paying attention to the data. Sharing lessons learned - especially the hard ones - strengthens the industry’s capacity to navigate choppy seas.
LATEST: In his six years as PA @statesystem chancellor, @dan_greenstein took a bold—and sometimes controversial—approach to repairing a public #university system in a downward spiral.
The question is, did it work?

Latest blog on how PA politics shaped vision, goals, priorities of @statesystem’s redesign, even how it was communicated.
Going out on a limb here but guessing political influences on
#highered will get more not less intense for a while.
Enjoy.

Latest lessons from @statesystem's redesign. How organizational shapes contours of transformational change. Not how "culture eats strategy for breakfast" but how culture is a lever that drives change if engaged purposefully, constrains it if not.

Let's build a new system for higher education that unites our PASSHE schools and community colleges, preserving local leadership while uniting these institutions behind the goal of educating Pennsylvania.
@dan_greenstein's right, this bold vision will engage more people, create more talent, fill more jobs, and keep our economy strong.
Thanks to the many who asked about @GovernorShapiro’s proposal for a new #highered system w/ @statesystem universities & community colleges as equals. Lots of work remains, but excited to explore. Tremendous opportunity for PA. Read more in today’s blog bit.ly/42bQH4N
Appreciate an opportunity to speak with friend & colleague @BasharHanna2 on his Common Ground podcast. Covered a range of topics including future of #highered, of @statesystem, & the choices universities will make today that will determine their tomorrow. bit.ly/3UdHx5W
My latest blog reviews pressures enabling disruption of US #highered. It lands on a countervailing view based on evidence of creative adaptivity in less- and non-selective institutions. An optimistic start to 2024 and a call for action in targeted areas. bit.ly/3vVNfPu
The SCOTUS majority decision on affirmative action in #highered admissions threw a sharp curve in the
road our nation travels to ensure equal opportunity for all. It did not, it cannot, and it will not alter the arc of the moral universe. That continues to bend toward justice.
Nor does SCOTUS alter @statesystem universities’ enduring commitment to giving ALL Pennsylvanians: affordable education launching sustaining careers. That is our mission as PA’s only public universities; our practice, our privilege, & a hallmark of our current & future success.
Setting an example for all of us in #highered, reminding us of our higher civic mission. Thanks @HACCSki for your leadership. @statesystem shares your pride in support of #LGBTQIA students and employees and your enduring commitment to [re-]building a more compassionate world.

Appreciate @GovernorShapiro’s commitment to address structural & funding challenges w/ PA & US #highered. They leave too many jobs unfilled due to lack of qualified workers and too many people and communities behind. Opportunity for PA to lead. Onwards. bit.ly/3Yn8Lpb
Look forward to working with @GovernorShapiro to realize full potential of state-owned @StateSystem universities - most affordable #highered option in PA. We launch our mostly low & middle income students into sustaining careers working in & for PA in ed health, business, STEM.
