I’m always fascinated by takes like these. When presented with a population of diverse and talented characters of mixed races and genders, the actual quesiton is: What’s the probability that I’ll come up with a list of all men? What’s the probability that I’ll come up with a list with zero people of color? It’s like coming up with heads for 10 coin tosses, then 10 more, then 10 more. After 100 instances of 10 coin tosses all heads, you might say, “Huh, I wonder if the design of this system is flawed.” Or “Why on earth aren’t tails coming up more often?” But the weird thing is that people ARE asking this question. “Why aren’t tails coming up ever?” And then the weirder thing is that instead of being curious about it, folks who toss the coins take the results personally. “There’s nothing wrong with heads! Stop making this about heads! Stop insisting on asking about tails!” It’s totally possible that heads come up in all 10 slots. It’ll happen many times! But when it happens over and over and over, people start to ask: I wonder what’s up with the design of this system such that only heads are coming up. As a designer? That’s where I’d be curious.
