Israeli airstrikes continue to hit Gaza every day, killing and injuring people across the Strip. In the last 24 hours, our teams have treated 11 people, including 5 children, wounded by airstrikes.  In the last week, we have treated 22 people with shrapnel wounds or injuries from explosions. Once again, Israeli forces are showing that nowhere is safe in Gaza.  Today our teams at Al-Zawayda field hospital treated 8 people wounded in an Israeli airstrike; 3 were children. Yesterday, an Israeli strike hit a displacement camp in Khan Younis. Our teams at Al-Attar healthcare clinic treated 3 people, including 2 children. These attacks are part of a continuing pattern across Gaza. On 11 September, our teams at Al-Attar had treated 11 others injured in Israeli airstrikes. On 13 September, an Israeli airstrike hit a car next to an MSF bus transporting humanitarian workers, injuring one of our staff.

Can One Health move beyond colonial knowledge systems? Need to approach "issues + interventions from a truly intersectoral, inclusive, & participatory perspective, with & for the people/countries concerned. It means tackling social health inequalities and power dynamics head-on"

"...In science, we typically turn to ethics committees to define what is permissible and what is not. But these standards remain too insensitive to issues of justice to prevent epistemic injustice or ensure the full recognition of marginalized actors."

Suicide is now the LEADING cause of death for US medical residents. We are losing 500 physicians a year. That is an entire med school class. Stop demanding "resilience" from doctors and start fixing the system. Tie executive bonuses to wellness, not just RVUs. Link to the recent episode is in the comments 👇

I currently have three papers in review at "high impact" journals. One of them has been sitting there for two years. In that time my daughter was born and learned how to walk, but apparently publishing a PDF was still not possible for me. For another one, after four months in review the editor told me they cannot find a second reviewer and asked me to suggest more reviewers. A third one sent me a message in 2026 saying the PDF I uploaded was larger than 10 MB and that I should please reupload everything to make the file smaller. All of this just to eventually pay between 7,000 and 12,000 USD per paper so someone can officially approve that the science we do is "legitimate". Reminder: not a single reviewer will be compensated here. I still don't understand how we as scientists can collectively be so smart when doing science and still tolerate a system like this when it comes to sharing our findings. We should move to preprints plus open review, whether human or AI, asap. So frustrated about it. I'd suggest sharing your work on bioRxiv or medRxiv, reading and reviewing preprints when you can, and highlighting good research, especially if it is still a preprint. Try platforms like ResearchHub (that pay for peer review) and experiment with AI based reviewers for faster feedback. Instead I read this as a proposed "revolutionary" measure:

Global military expenditure just hit $2.7 trillion - in a single year. According to @UN estimates, ending world hunger by 2030 would require $93 billion annually. That means we spend almost 30 times more every year on killing each other than on making sure everyone eats. Numbers don't lie. Our priorities do.

Congratulations to SPHPSS Prof Akke Vellinga and the PRUDENCE research team whose research into the use of point-of-care testing in reducing antibiotic prescribing for respiratory infections has been published in The Lancet Primary Care journal. The research involved 2642 patients in 13 European countries and showed unequivocally that point-of-care testing in general practice does NOT reduce antibiotic prescribing for respiratory infections overall or influence patient recovery, finally giving an answer to the question of whether or not we should introduce these tests in general practice.
