Gonna try to be careful with this one, but another hot take here it goes. *been on my mind for years. Nothing to do with a specific case* My point in writing this novel is to hopefully incite some inflection on readers. If a few people can change. Then maybe a lot of people can change. R6 didn't lose its integrity overnight. The community handed it away slowly. And we will never take accountability for that. Therefor, the crisis will never be fixed. Ubisoft has failed, yes, but that left things in the hands of the competitive player base. That just never came in the way that was needed. I think of all the "false ban" claims. EVERYONE claims false ban the moment they get banned. So it means nothing. Many really are innocent, but this became normalized so that no one even bothers to look in to it when someone actually gets the ban. These things erode credibility and gives cheaters room to hind behind sympathy. I think of all the "hero worship" and fan culture. The "everyone knows me" defense. This is argumentum ad populum fallacy. Especially in the lower Tiers, teams, coaches, and orgs prioritize results over transparency. They are going to get flamed whether they openly come out that someone was cheating, or if the cheater gets discovered. Nobody wants to investigate their own. And that silence has become the cheaters greatest ally. At some point, honesty needs to be rewarded a little bit? Maybe? But we don't have a social environment where ONLY the cheater is the culprit. The complicity of humor and deflection: Players joking about cheating and faking accusations on innocents. Irony culture made cheating seem unserious. This normalized the conversation of cheating and helped the real offenders blend in. Steamers and content creators "testing" software "just to see". Influential people joke about or discuss cheats casually. Even ironic humor: "I'm cheating lol" All of this desensitized the community to the moral weight of it all which eventually normalized cheating through exposure. Smurfing and "gray zone" behavior. We long accepted smurfing, account sharing, account selling/buying and "soft cheating". This has blurred the ethical line to the point where a significant number in the community think "winning by any means short of detection" is acceptable. The leap from "Macro" to "DMA" have become incremental - not moral. And this is what bothers the hell out of me. I personally see this any time someone has a recoil script in their MOSS. Example: No one would defend their teammate if a PC checker found a DMA. But EVERYONE defends their teammate when a macro is found. They are both cheating! Toxicity. Oh boy, here it comes. I will die on this hill. Toxicity has become the community’s baseline. There’s no debate about that. And beyond being a moral issue, it’s also helped fuel the cheating crisis. As a league admin, I’ll admit it; We form impressions of players as we watch them interact. We see 70% of players talking trash in match chats and roll our eyes. We try to treat everyone equally, but there’s always that instinctive thought: “This guy’s a jerk — wouldn’t surprise me if he’s cheating.” That gut feeling used to mean something. Years ago, you could sometimes predict who’d end up exposed as a cheater without seeing a single round of gameplay. But now, toxicity is so widespread that it’s no longer a tell — it’s just normal. And that’s the real problem: we let toxicity become culture. Cheating is severe toxicity. In doing so, we erased one of the social signals that separated cheaters from competitors with integrity. I have so much more...but it's already so long no one is going to make it this far. The point here is if EVERYONE spends just a little bit of effort worrying about their own actions. The community will be a better place. Then the good guys can begin the real battle against the bad guys.
