On March 5, 1979, Voyager 1 turned its cameras toward Jupiter and captured one of the most haunting close-ups ever taken of the Great Red Spot—the colossal, centuries-old storm that still churns across the planet’s face. The image, later carefully reprocessed and sharpened, reveals a restless world of coiling cloud banks, spinning vortices, and turbulent streamers of gas. Colors reconstructed from violet, green, and orange filter images bring out subtle differences in cloud height and chemistry, turning the storm into a swirling mosaic of cream, rust, and deep crimson. Larger than Earth itself, the Great Red Spot is a vast anticyclone powered by Jupiter’s ferocious atmospheric engine. Voyager’s flyby showed the giant planet as anything but a static gas ball: it revealed lightning flickering through its clouds, weather systems racing at furious speeds, and cloud patterns evolving on a scale no terrestrial storm could match.
