By the end of World War II, more than 12,000 Hellcats had been built.
US Navy figures credited F6F pilots with 5,163 enemy aircraft destroyed in aerial combat while 270 Hellcats were lost to enemy aircraft in the air, producing the famous claimed ratio of roughly 19 to 1.
Those figures were wartime credited victories, not a perfect modern count of actual enemy losses. And the Hellcat did not win the Pacific air war by itself.
American radar and fighter direction, pilot training, tactics, enormous industrial production and the devastating loss of experienced Japanese aviators all helped transform the balance in the Pacific.
But the Hellcat arrived at exactly the right moment. It was fast, heavily armed, rugged and designed to bring American pilots home. Thousands poured from Grumman's factories and onto the decks of an expanding American carrier fleet.
Japan had begun the Pacific War with some of the finest naval aviators in the world. By 1944, they were facing thousands of American pilots backed by an industrial and training system Japan could no longer match.
And many of those Americans were flying the same aircraft.
The Grumman F6F Hellcat.

Jake McNiece made four combat jumps in the Second World War. Normandy, Holland, Bastogne, and a final jump on February 13 1945 near the German town of Prüm to guide in a resupply drop. Almost no American paratrooper matched that.
He fought through some of the hardest battles in the European war, led men through all of it, and ended the war as an acting first sergeant, even though his record of discipline problems meant he never held high permanent rank.
After the war he went home to Oklahoma and worked quietly for the United States Postal Service for nearly 28 years. He died in 2013 at the age of 93, one of the last surviving members of the Filthy Thirteen.
In 1967 a film called The Dirty Dozen filled cinemas with a story of misfit soldiers sent on an impossible mission. The men of the Filthy Thirteen were part of the inspiration for it. But the real squad were not convicts. They were filthy, undisciplined, hard-drinking paratroopers who happened to be some of the bravest men in the 101st Airborne.
The next time you see that photograph of the men in war paint, you will know who they were.
This was the story of the Filthy Thirteen.

—¿A dónde vamos?

On May 17, 2023, the @FT ran this headline:
“Yanis Varoufakis is back — and he has a plan. The leftwing former Greek finance minister is making waves ahead of Sunday’s elections.”
Inside the article, one could read:
“But although Greece has begun to put the economic woes of the past decade behind it, the appeal of political radicalism of the sort Varoufakis represents endures, especially among the young. And this is something the next government cannot afford to ignore.”
ft.com/content/f3f12866-8476…
Now consider what happened four days later. In the election, Varoufakis’ party, MeRA25, finished eighth, with 2.63% of the vote and zero seats.
Of course, getting an election wrong can happen to anyone. Forecasting politics is difficult. But after reading the article, I called several close friends who happen to be Greek and, well, economists. All of them told me that MeRA25 had no meaningful traction and that the reputable polls:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opinio…
were consistently pointing in that direction.
What surprised me was not that the article turned out to be wrong. What surprised me was the disconnect between the article’s tone and the information publicly available at the time.
For a newspaper whose readership consists largely of business professionals who rely on accurate information to make decisions, this kind of misreading is unfortunate.
But more seriously, the article seems part of a broader pattern. For example, I wrote today a critical response to a recent @FT article on Spain and Pedro Sánchez:
xitter.cf/JesusFerna7026/status/…
Several readers pointed out similar problems in coverage of their own countries. In their view, the decline in standards at @FT over the last decade has been one of the more troubling developments in the European media landscape.
There is also a larger issue at play. If major newspapers of record develop a reputation for letting narrative outweigh evidence, public trust inevitably declines. Readers might reasonably wonder: if reporting can be this inaccurate in one case, where else might the same problem occur?
Experts and institutions have lost credibility in recent years for many reasons. But one key factor is the growing perception that analysis often reflects preferences more than evidence.
What surprises me is how little awareness there seems to be of the extent of the damage this causes. And I say all this precisely because institutions like the FT matter too much to let their standards slip.

I am consistently struck by how poor the coverage of Spain is in much of the English-speaking media, but your piece reaches a new low in terms of failing to meet even the most basic standards of objectivity.
Instead of informing an international readership with accuracy and balance, the article appears driven by narrow ideological preferences. That does a disservice to both your readers and the standards of serious journalism.
It is deeply disappointing.

@SusanSarandon My father was murdered by ETA, Basque terrorist group that spent 60 years killing more than 900 innocent people and spreading pain and fear throughout Spain. Those women you mentioned are the mothers or wives of those who killed my father, among many others.I understand that you may see them as victims of something. But they are only victims of their own fanatism. Here is some graphic evidence of what they are capable of doing. They took my father away from me when I was 15 years old. Because he was a spanish soldier and defended his country.
I suggest you get better informed. – at Madrid, Spain

There was no “us” before Spain. They did not colonize us, we descend from them. Unlike the British, the Spanish, who are Catholic, built families.
