The medical "consensus" on circumcision was never as independent as it looked.
FOIA documents show a small group of advocates worked the system from the inside. A thread on what the emails revealed. 🧵

Circumcision removes 12.5 square inches of foreskin — roughly the size of an index card. go.nature.com/3PKvzk3 This isn’t “extra skin.” It’s highly functional sensitive tissue. Once it’s cut off, it’s gone forever. Do you agree this choice should belong to the person? 👍👎
For anyone seeing this and realizing what circumcision has taken from them: your feelings are valid, and we're working on a solution. Foregen is developing a regenerative medicine procedure to restore the foreskin in form, function, and sensation.

A handful of circumcision advocates held key positions inside the WHO, CDC, NIH, and a few elite universities.

We uncovered data showing that Medicaid was billed nearly $37 billion between 1999-2016 for non-therapeutic infant circumcisions. It is unlawful for Medicaid to be used on unnecessary treatment. End the funding for circumcision now! circumcisionisafraud.com/foi…

The desire to update the AAP's policy may have come from within the CDC. These emails show @PeterKilmarx prioritized Medicaid coverage after the AAP's 1999 policy led 16 states to drop it. So in 2007, the CDC wanted AAP to "change their recommendations." 1drv.ms/b/s!Ak3Qe-X3Jbyog58e…
"During twenty years of active practice in general medicine and surgery it has been my experience to have seen many fads and fancies of our profession arise, flourish for a time, and then fade away…I have been awaiting a sensible attitude of our brethren in the matter of...
...circumcision, but by the journals I judge that the acme of that fad has not been reached. I wish to be numbered among the pioneers who protest against the indiscriminate circumcision of male infants."

Brian Morris, the world's foremost circumcision enthusiast, works with a network of proponents to publish pro-circumcision literature and respond venomously to skeptics. In this email chain, Morris characterizes these efforts as a "war" between good and evil.
One of his acolytes, Richard Wamai, describes their efforts as "defending science" and insinuates that circumcision skeptics have an "anti-science agenda". Wamai also thanks Morris for encouraging him to take the lead on writing this: malecircumcision.org/sites/d…
Morris responds by pressing his disciples to remain ever-vigilant in their struggle against "anti-circ drivel".
