We have been told for centuries that remarkable people are self-made.
I was skeptical.
So I asked fourteen people who achieved astonishing success whether it was true. Not how they succeeded, but when their lives first started to have lift.
Their answer was that no one climbs alone.
For Michael Phelps it was his mother and a coach at a neighborhood pool in Baltimore who kept telling an unruly boy he could be an Olympian until he believed them.
For Warren Buffett it was a classroom at Columbia where Benjamin Graham handed a young analyst from Omaha a way of thinking that outlasted every boom and bust on Wall Street.
And for a sharecropper's daughter in Jim Crow Georgia it was a third-grade teacher in a one-room schoolhouse who looked at her and saw a chemist, years before her work on rocket fuel helped put a man on the moon.

In Israel, you often cannot tell who is Jewish and who is Arab by looking.
Lucy Aharish is the Arab-Israeli. Tzachi Halevy is the Jew. They are married.
Jews came back from Baghdad, Sana’a, Fez, Warsaw, and Addis Ababa. Ethiopian Jews are Black. Plenty of Palestinians are fairer than plenty of Israelis. The faces do not sort into the two boxes the slogan needs.
“White European colonizer” is a costume. They were not planting a flag in someone else’s country. They were a people coming home from places that never let them stop being the “other,” and they were often murdered for it.
Two million Arab citizens of Israel vote, sit in the Knesset, and fill hospital wards as doctors and pharmacists. That is not tolerance. That is a country.
The Jewish side said yes to a state beside an Arab state several times, starting in 1937. The other side has always said no to Jewish sovereignty in any part of the Land.
Trying to make this about “race” was the Soviet rebrand in the 1970s. That lie is still doing the work today, especially on campus and increasingly on the Western left.
We've all been in situations where the tone is distinctly uncomfortable, even hostile. We may not know the reasons, and may never find out. Therefore, we are better off analyzing a tough situation with limited information rather than just reacting.

I don’t think folks are understanding this properly. What @realDonaldTrump has done is cancelled the USG subscriptions for these outlets. When you go into senior positions they bombard you with “exclusive” content subscriptions for tens of thousands of dollars a year. Apparently the Biden administration put us on the hook for $8 million worth of this nonsense that should be pretty worthless to people who ostensibly have access to the highest levels of classified information and is just a subsidy for the fake news. Well done.

🚨 IDF MOVES TO RELEASE OCT. 7 ATROCITY FILM AMID ‘NAZA’ FALLOUT
The IDF is advancing plans to publicly release its 47-minute compilation of Hamas’s Oct. 7 massacre footage, according to Channel 12.
Netanyahu and the defense establishment reportedly back the move as Israel pushes back against the “NAZA” documentary’s allegations over AI-assisted strikes in Gaza.
The IDF says it “categorically rejects” the documentary’s allegations and stresses strike decisions are made “by human personnel only… and not by artificial intelligence.”
The Oct. 7 compilation has until now only been screened behind closed doors.

I have written eleven opinion pieces for The New York Times across 35 years. I still read it. I write what follows with no joy: while I have watched it become increasingly partisan in its news coverage over the decades, no topic has made its loss of balance clearer to me than its handling of Israel since October 7.
This week the Times published a sentence suggesting that Israeli victimhood over the 2023 Hamas terror attack was not a fact, but a "matter of perception." It only added an Editors' Note after furious backlash, much of it here on X. I have written corrections myself. A sentence like that doesn't slip past a reporter, an editor, and a copy desk by accident. The underlying problem is that it did not set off an alarm until readers outside the building made noise.
And that was simply the latest example. In May, the paper's Opinion section ran a column alleging Israeli forces used dogs to rape Palestinian detainees, built on sourcing no other serious outlet had corroborated. The Times's own executive editor later said the newsroom "wouldn't have done that exact piece."
Now there's data behind the pattern. A peer-reviewed Yale study of 1,559 Times articles on the war found the word "Israel" appeared more than three times as often as "Hamas," and that 1,423 of those articles mentioned neither Israeli casualties after Oct. 7 nor Hamas combatants killed in the war.
"Paper of record" was never a hereditary title. It was a claim about earned trust. I am not sure anyone still believes it.

I attended a medical conference this week. Next to me in the coffee line was a woman wearing a hijab. She introduced herself as an international surgical fellow at a major medical school (a big deal).
I asked which country she’s from. She proudly said “Israel!”
She’s lived in Israel her entire life, as a practicing devout Muslim woman. Was educated there. Became a physician, then a surgeon, and made it to the US for a prestigious 2 year fellowship. And she’s absolutely proud to be Israeli.
She told me how surprised she is when some people react negatively to her being from Israel because she and her family are treated with respect and given every opportunity.
Sounds like Israel isn’t so great at the apartheid and genocide thing. 🇮🇱

Setting aside the blood libels rooted in Jew-hatred, and the propaganda aimed at demonizing and delegitimizing the Jewish state -- all completely unmoored from facts, evidence, and logic -- there's one more point to be made.
Given the size, scope, and nature of the utterly savage, animalistic, and barbaric terror inflicted on the Israelis, and given the capabilities Israel possesses, it must have taken an utterly super-human level of respect for life for the country to have prosecuted this war the way that it has.
If America faced an equivalent attack on Oct. 7th, would Americans, to say nothing of the families of the victims, demand anything less than the total obliteration of the place from which the terror came -- in this case, a place built as a terror cul de sac, by an elected terrorist group integrated into every aspect of society, where the "civilian" populace participated gleefully in the most sadistic and vile of acts?
It can be argued that Israel's restraint will prove to its detriment if and when the evil forces within Gaza rebuild and re-emerge.
That the world screams "genocide" when anything but that occurred, and as actual genocides go totally ignored, provides a lesson in and of itself for the West. You can't satisfy people who hate your guts and want you dead. You must do what is necessary to defend yourself.
