Today marks 88 years since the 1938 New England Hurricane roared ashore Long Island and Connecticut. It’s hands-down the most violent hurricane on record to strike the Northeastern U.S.
Here’s some notable feats from this monster:
- Produced the highest wind gust ever recorded from a hurricane in the United States, at 186 mph in Massachusetts
- Storm surge caused tide to rise 7 feet in 30 minutes at Battery Park, NYC
- Surged slammed Long Island with such force, that seismographs in Alaska detected it.
- Highest tide ever produced north of the Carolinas, at 17 feet 5 inches (and likely most violent surge on the U.S. east coast).
- Salt from the sea was seen caked on windows in Vermont.
- Downed over 2 billion trees, impacting 35% of New England’s forest cover.
- Traveled over 600 miles in 12 hours.
- The most powerful hurricane to strike New England area in 300+ years.
This storm had incredible power. To get a wind gust of 186 mph, on a 600-foot hill 100 miles east of the storm’s center is insane.
The forward speed, the wind, and most of all, the storm surge — like a tsunami. We would be incredibly unlucky to see a storm like this again in our lifetimes, and all the new development along south-facing coastlines should pray we don’t.

On May 16, 1963, astronaut Gordon Cooper was alone in Faith 7, a capsule so small he could barely turn around, on the 22nd and final orbit of the longest American spaceflight yet.
Then the systems started dying.
First a sensor falsely warned that the capsule was starting reentry. Then a short circuit knocked out the automatic control system, the one that would point the capsule at exactly the right angle to come home. Too shallow, and it would skip off the atmosphere. Too steep, and it would burn up. Then the carbon dioxide level began rising inside his cabin and his suit.
"Things are beginning to stack up a little," Cooper told Mission Control.
Engineers on the ground could see the failures on their screens. None of them could reach inside the capsule.
So Cooper did it by hand. He took a grease pencil and drew reference lines on the inside of his window. When Earth's horizon sat on the horizontal line, he knew the capsule was tilted to the correct 34 degrees. He lined the vertical mark up with stars he had memorized before the flight to set his heading. Then he timed the retrorocket burn with his wristwatch, while fellow astronaut John Glenn, aboard a tracking ship in the Pacific, counted him down by radio.
He fired the rockets manually. He released the drogue chute manually at 50,000 feet, the main chute at 11,000, and the landing bag just before the water.
Faith 7 hit the Pacific 80 miles southeast of Midway Island, 4.4 miles from the aircraft carrier USS Kearsarge. It was the most accurate splashdown of the entire Mercury program.
Sailors on the Kearsarge had spelled out "MERCURY 9" on the flight deck in their white uniforms. Thirty-five minutes later, Cooper and his capsule were on board.
The lesson stuck. After Faith 7, NASA made sure every astronaut trained to fly the spacecraft by hand

Meanwhile, Politico has repeatedly published antisemitic dual loyalty conspiracy theories about American Jews serving in the Trump administration, with implicit insinuations and explicit quotes about getting them fired. They are part of a broader antisemitic campaign on both the left and right aimed at excluding American Jews from public life. Their reporters and editors use anonymous and often single sources to promote these antisemitic attacks.
It’s garbage. They put this hit piece out on the last day of Yom Kippur, and right before his wedding.
Everyone involved should be ashamed.

In 1953, Freeman Dyson went to see Enrico Fermi, eager to present his calculations on the strong nuclear force. As Dyson later recalled, Fermi listened politely, then told him that his work had neither a clear physical basis nor a rigorous mathematical foundation.
Dyson pointed out that his results agreed with Fermi’s experiments. Fermi asked how many arbitrary parameters he had used.
“Four,” Dyson replied.
Fermi recalled a remark by his friend John von Neumann: “With four parameters I can fit an elephant, and with five I can make him wiggle his trunk.”
The point was simple. With enough adjustable parameters, a model can match the data without explaining the physics.
It was a painful conversation, but Dyson later credited Fermi with saving him years of wasted work.
