India’s semiconductor industry is now operating at next level of depth and coverage. 𓇲
620 startups founded. ✅️
$1B raised cumulatively. ✅️
Late-stage VC funding up >3x since 2023. ✅️
In addition, 20% of the world’s chip designers already operate out of India.
The real structural shift: pure-play design services → proprietary IP + global M&A.
Key signals from MCA and Tracxn data:
• Late-stage capital inflection: $108M (2023) → $361M (2025) + $228.7M YTD 2026.
• Investor depth: First-time chip investors jumped from 12 (2021) to 80 (2024).
• M&A velocity: 68 deals in 5 years; 2026 median deal size surged to $125M.
• Architectural buy-in: Infineon bought C2i (AI power controllers). Renesas bought Steradian (radar IP). Global majors are acquiring core architecture, not just headcount.
Domestic sovereign pull (CCTV, biometrics, EV motor controllers) is providing local fabless ventures with real commercial off-takers, breaking the endless "seed-stage trap".
Fabs give physical supply-chain resilience.
Fabless IP gives enduring economic leverage.
India’s definitive moat isn’t just building the cleanroom. It is owning the architecture.

Pleasantly surprised to see this iconic photograph in @bsindia today, as part of a wonderful piece chronicling 35 years of Hyderabad’s transformation. In 1997, I had the opportunity to make a presentation to Bill Gates on why Microsoft should choose Hyderabad. That meeting eventually led to Microsoft setting up its first development centre outside the United States in Hyderabad.
The rest, as they say, is history. Hyderabad’s journey is a reminder that transformative change begins with a bold vision, backed by persistence and policy consistency over decades. I’m enclosing more pictures from the archive here -

The Election Commission of India is under fire like never before.
The SIR has struck 13 crore names off draft rolls, putting the EC at the centre of intense public debate over its role in deciding who gets to vote — and who doesn’t.
HOWEVER, what nobody knew: through that same period, some of the sharpest questions were being asked from inside.
Out today, after months of work. Our #ExpressInvestigation 🧵

No MDR on P2PM merchants (small ones)
MDR of 40 bps on P2M above Rs 2,000; capped at Rs 300
Dedicated fund for small merchants to be established
Certain categories to attract a flat fee of Rs 5 above Rs 2,000
Includes insurances, railways, telecom, fuel
#Breaking: Social media platform Meta has agreed to report child sexual abuse cases to law enforcement agencies in India as well.
Why is this important? (1/5)
Because till now, almost all cases of CSAM and details of repeat offenders was almost exclusively reported to (NCMEC).
PS: This is a win for @GoI_MeitY, which had been pushing for this directing access to such information. This point had been in fact one of the major discussion points during August meetings with Joel Kaplan, Meta's chief of global affairs.
