Wow. Less than 40% of people drive in the core areas, yet they occupy 80% of the space. What a terribly inefficient transport mode for cities.
.@CBCNews fact-checking claims from Sarkaria that only 1.2% of Torontonians commute by bike. Sarkaria continues to mislead the public, citing "conversations" with unnamed business owners as the reason for spending taxpayer money to tear out existing lanes

Interesting article by @mrmoneymustache — most of it applies to the next election in Canada as well. mrmoneymustache.com/2024/10/…
To be very clear, I think the election results are entirely legitimate.
However it is very odd that republicans were taking about “massive” voter fraud just yesterday… but now they are silent about it. I wonder if they can even admit to themselves they made it all up.

Americans made a poor choice yesterday that will have major negative consequences for themselves and the world.
I suggest Canadians planning to vote for Poilievre not get too smug about it.

Update: We got this clown community noted! Spread the word - these data are lies!
The 1.2 per cent of people who commute by bike shouldn’t be clogging primary roads for the over 70 per cent of people who drive. It’s just common sense.

Prabmeet is referencing a report on the Toronto CMA in the 2011 census. The outdated figure includes rural and suburban areas outside of the city.
It predates the Bloor (2016), University (2020) and Yonge (2021) bike lanes. Toronto has added 115km of bike lanes since 2018.

Bloor St rush hour, November 2024. 12 bikes occupying the same amount of distance as 3 cars.
This is one major reason that I continue to bike to work. Biking takes 13-15 minutes no matter what. Driving takes as little as 12 minutes with no traffic (i.e. after 9 pm) or up to 30 minutes in heavy traffic (i.e. when I actually go to work).

If you heard Doug Ford say only 1.2% of Torontonians bike to work and thought, "That can't be true" — you're right.
The real number is around 10%.
Add in errands & socializing: 44%.
Add in all cycling: 70%.
And growing.

Of course, it's not even about the bike lanes. Depressing that @fordnation, @PrabSarkaria & PCs will play politics with our safety. I hope the approval ratings are worth the carnage that will ensue. 📷 @tomflood1
During the last “six months of winter” there were exactly 5 days where I found it slightly challenging to ride a bike.
Anyone know which stores in #ldnont accept plastic film/bags for recycling? Used to go to Lowes but they don’t accept now that they are Rona. @eyeonthefly
Why stop at secondary roads? Why don’t we just move all cycle lanes to rural areas outside of cities, since cyclists apparently don’t have anywhere they actually want to go.

Rather than once again meddling in municipality’s decisions, Doug Ford should focus on the many provincial priorities he’s neglected including health care and housing. He’s not the mayor of Toronto, he’s the premier and he should remember that. thestar.com/news/doug-ford-t…
