🌍 Can we actually see where HF propagation begins and ends?
My latest project visualizes worldwide HF propagation boundaries using thousands of live PSK Reporter reception reports on an interactive map.

After three months of work, the first beta version of my antenna calculator is read, now available in English as well.

Bullseye! Our Sun finally aims straight, launching a big solar storm directly at Earth. Impact: Early October 9 UTC time. This is the best coronal blast wave I've seen in a long time. Kudos to @HaloCME for the analysis despite being on the mend. Please help me wish an esteemed colleague and SDO/AIA team member a speedy recovery!
Your antenna may not be what you think it is.
S53ZO’s drone measurements show how towers, antennas, guy wires, terrain and ground can dramatically distort real HF patterns. Verticals can be far from omnidirectional, arrays can develop deep nulls youtube.com/live/O6b00FVW8tA
Not good for propagation but beautiful to watch
New images captured by SMILE, a joint mission between ESA and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, show the entire auroral oval surrounding Earth’s North Pole in ultraviolet light, a global view that has not been seen in this way for around 18 years.
The video also shows the ring becoming brighter during a geomagnetic substorm, when stored energy in the magnetosphere is suddenly released and particles are accelerated toward the polar regions.
As these particles enter the upper atmosphere, they excite atmospheric gases and produce the auroral glow.
Observing the aurora from space makes it possible to study it as a complete, dynamic structure rather than only from individual locations on the ground.
Even though the path of totality is relatively narrow, the varying levels of solar obscuration around it could create interesting propagation opportunities across 3.5 to 10 MHz
August solar eclipse offers an opportunity to test nighttime propagation during the day. Interesting for North American stations: around 17Z, they may have a chance to work Asia on the low bands while still in full daylight, as the eclipse temporarily reduces D-layer absorption.

Solar Cycle 25 is declining faster than any of the major predictions at its beginning. It is trending below all curves in this plot by @helio4cast. The cycle is declining ahead of all predictions, the closest still being by @swmcintosh al., 2023 (and SC25 still trending 6-9 months ahead of it). Smells like solar minimum possibly as early as 2029-2030?
July was yet another slow month as Solar Cycle 25. The monthly sunspot number reached 78.1, way down from the peak of 216 in August 2024 - less than two years ago. Solar Cycle 25 is declining quite rapidly, we are now at about the same activity as in 2022-2023. Frankly, it kind of feels like SC24 right now. Perhaps not quite as bad, but it is really slow. Will we hit solar minimum before 2030?

Today a coronal mass ejection launched from the Sun towards Earth and the northern flank is expected to impact us around July 28th. Here is the awesome visualizer used: swx-trec.com/h3lioviz/visual…

"Beautiful 15m propagation this morning @ 05z! Band wide open across the Northern Hemisphere in the night. Even the difficult T31TT path from Kanton Island is coming through nicely. South America remains absent though — winter night-time MUF just isn't high enough to support it.
#JIDX 10:20Z and 21 MHz finally waking up! Hearing weak JA stations but strong asymmetry — I hear them much better than they hear me.
Likely sunset greyline effect: tilted ionosphere + longer first hop from JA to CT, while my return path is normal multi-hop.
