I guess mathematicians thought they were better then others. I quit my PhD in CS in March because it was obvious the writing was on the wall. Welcome to the club!
SHOCK AND AWE: AI MATHEMATICS Fields Medalist: the release seemed intended to show the systems could “massacre us in the deepest sense of the term.” Here are other striking remarks from Hugo Duminil-Copin’s 8 October 2026 seminar talk “Un grave défaut d’alignement de l’IA en mathématiques, 28 jours plus tard” (SMF MIAM series), drawn from the available auto-transcript of the YouTube recording. - On the scale of the damage to his own work: after noting that roughly 350 major problems had been resolved, he said he placed “several trucks” on the slide to illustrate the impact, because every problem he had cited in talks, papers, and both past and future funding applications had been solved—none left unresolved. He described himself as panicked and paralyzed in the middle of the night when the results appeared. - On volume: looking only at the OpenAI texts that cite him directly, he counted about 3,500 pages; he has published roughly 3,700 pages in his entire career. Specific clusters included six papers totaling over 600 pages on conformal invariance aspects of percolation (a major ongoing project of his group) and a sequence of papers on self-avoiding walks that he only gradually realized totaled more than 1,000 pages. - On process and alignment: he described the approach as systematic “farming” or “mining” of open problems, in which the program itself selects targets from the existing literature, amounting to “the complete automation of mathematical discovery.” He said the community’s request not to destroy the open conjectures that orient research was “absolutely ignored,” and that the release seemed intended to show the systems could “massacre us in the deepest sense of the term.” - On the human side: he reported that his PhD students and postdocs were in “a state of total panic,” with undergraduates and master’s students also asking whether mathematics still has a future, and stressed the immediate need for collective resilience rather than delayed discussion. He added that the community must manage both its own emotions and the surrounding media reaction, while avoiding internal polarization that would weaken arguments to funders.

Ossoff will be president someday sooner than later.

Since I had a little extra time around Wales today I decided to get a jump on things that are going on at home. Today I found my halloween costume so my dear wife didn’t have to waste any time on it.

After a week in France, I’m off to Cardiff, Wales for a few days. Any recommendations others than a castle and 25 pints of plain? 🤣

Textbook selfishness on display
legalizing weed sounded like a great idea when i was a 20yr old college kid smoking joints on the weekends not so much now that i’m a grown adult who does not partake and does not appreciate getting BLASTED with weed stench every time i step out into public

I see a trend happening in America and especially online. If you don't like the other persons opinions, you just insult them instead of having a real conversation on the issues. Once someone insults me, I put their opinion to zero because that to me is a glimpse into the fact they know I am right and don't know how to respond.

You can get that in other countries. The most American thing I can think of is drinking 20 bud/miller/busch lights before noon on a Sunday tailgating for the NFL.
Name something more American than McDonald’s fries and Diet Coke.

This guy fucks (if he was allowed to)
In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.

Trump called the stock market a casino himself - ‘no crying in the casino’. Maybe you should have spent more time in the books instead of ball because you’re dumb as hell.
Sports betting is correct but for you all that look at LeBron or any other person that are involved in prediction markets are totally misinformed on the subject. calling prediction markets sports gambling is like calling the stock market a casino. you don't have to like it, but it's a regulated exchange where people trade with each other, not a house that profits when you lose. Know the difference

In a world where anything can usually be bought, it’s great to see @wemby addressing an absolute fucking crisis in America. This sports gambling and prediction market stuff is a scourge on our society.

I haven’t been a big Wendy fan…. until today! He won me over. Thanks for being a real one, @wemby.
Victor Wembanyama was asked if he would ever sign a deal with a sports betting company: “Absolutely not. Honestly, I think it’s very sad to see some players promote it.”

*further worsened by AI.
How can anyone claim AI is non-essential? It’s how we are going to solve the biggest issues we are facing. inequality, disease, climate change will all be solved by AI.

I suspect it’s just because you don’t know a single person with a net worth of +1M. Which is also a super low bar, that is basically every boomer that bought a 1,300 sq ft ranch in 1984.
Very interesting! Now that I think of it, I actually don't think I know a single person with a +$1M net worth who drinks (or at least gets drunk). Interesting correlation. My wife and I stopped drinking when she was pregnant almost 5 years ago and we haven't touched alcohol since.

I don’t know about you all, but frankly I’m insulted by the notion that my vote this November could be bought for 5k. Not to mention the inflation this would cause. All things considered, I cannot in good conscience accept a penny less than 10k!

I’m going to sell off my Campanella and Brock player collections. I’ve got almost everything for both, standard issues and odd balls. If you’re a player collector of either and have a corner of your collection to fill in, shoot me a DM and I’ll try to assist.

I'm sorry we never got a chance to meet, but getting this note from Dolly really had a an impact on me. She definitely didn't have to take the time to do it. Even for a kid who mostly listened to rap music, she was an icon. A superstar in every sense. Rest easy Dolly. And thank you for the kind words.

I never thought I’d have to say it, but last night two suspects broke into the Cloverhound offices in Costa Rica. The suspects were apprehended and in moment of compassion, released without charges.
