Kind of sad that Econ Twitter is basically dead. I follow so many econ accounts that used to post, educate, debate, and engage, and nearly all have gone mostly dormant. I get it - the trolls, bots, cranks, & bigots have turned Twitter into an unusable sewer. But sad to see.
Great to be with @jennzaba on @business Horizons Middle East & Africa to scope out the prospects for this week's U.S.-China summit. Most interesting is what was not on the agenda, like the Chinese trade surplus, which may be the world's most pressing economic challenge.

In 2001, the weaponization of airplanes suddenly dominated geopolitical risks. Threats of further attacks would raise the costs of delivering goods and services anywhere. We clearly didn’t have the imagination to believe that the U.S. government would eventually contain the terrorist threat to global commerce, but start taking commercial hostages itself....

Let’s stipulate that whatever deal was actually struck between Delcy Rodríguez and Donald Trump looks chillingly like an age-old exercise of neo-colonial resource extraction, implicitly backed by the United States military. But it creates facts on the ground that investors and creditors will have to accept and may actually speed a flow of money to Venezuelans.
