I suspect many people thought Jesus followers were losing when he was on the cross, too. Perhaps the only way to win is to lose.
What if we didn't believe we had to survive at all costs? What if we chose faithfulness instead?
The central problem of the American Church is that we don’t actually believe the cross & a cruciform life is the best way to address evil. We’d rather have Barabbas.

Jesus regularly lived and ministered in ways that left his reputation open to critique and criticism. He didn't allow love for his reputation to take priority over his love for people.

Niche rant: I'm so tired of people who question the veracity of the New Testament coming to the conclusion that bc they have questions, the NT books don't count as anything. Just bc you have questions about it doesn't mean it's not evidence. It still needs to be accounted for.
