After we presented at CCC, Ledger shit on our nano implant. Said it was a “james bond” hack. It bypassed their authentic hardware check. I might have to come out of retirement to do another talk after the run of hardware wallet failures this year.
My spy-implanted ledger came from Malaysia, and had flawless shrink wrap. Even opening it, at first you don't see the implant which is cleverly hidden where the screen's padding is supposed to be. Follow Ledger's guidance to check yours: support.ledger.com/article/4…

We've built the technology, we've got the tools, but somewhere along the way the punk got left behind. The authors of the Dark Forest zine, @jurbed and @cryptotx at @InstituteCrypto at Dark Prague 2025.

'strings' remains the most useful hacking tool.
In August the Core Lightning maintainers told node operators to upgrade or run --offline. There was nothing to upgrade to for another two days, and when v26.06.7 arrived it was binaries only, with the source held back a further two weeks so attackers could not reverse-engineer the fixes. We (me + AI models) used that window. Ten AI models, one public source tree, the same five sentences of prompt, under $100 between them. Every report was hashed into the Bitcoin blockchain with OpenTimestamps as it was finished, nine days before upstream published the source, so none of it can be backdated. Reading source, the models found four of the nine defects the release fixed. Running "strings" on the public download found five more, and one of those is theft that pays for itself: as a forwarding node you refund the sender upstream, and the peer then claims the outgoing HTLC on-chain with the preimage it held the whole time. You pay twice and collect nothing. It was findable because the patched binary carries upstream's own new log line, FUNDS LOSS, which names the function, and the vulnerable code sat in the public v26.06.6 tree throughout. Three models at three price points landed on it within minutes of the download. The embargo hides the patch, but not the mechanism. Each philosophy, movement or subculture deserves an aesthetic style, literary genre, and cultural imprint in general. @jurbed and @bitpunkfm put the punk back in cypherpunk through a zine - the first edition of which is literally a piece of dark forest - black paper.

This tape was made without a computer. This new issue has a book review of The Dream Hotel and The Every, a high level overview of how NOAA weather alerts work, and some great music. Go to bitpunk.fm and press play to hear the tape.

March issue is out on tape! The "postcard protocol" for getting a tape has been working pretty well. This is a run of 20. Each tape is serialized (done with a manual typewriter this time). #cassette #CassetteTape zine.bitpunk.fm/touch-tones/

Hack for kids: instead of an unrestricted access to a tablet, give them a walkman with cassettes. They get understanding of physical medium, they can record songs they like (even from YouTube), stories, ... Modern walkmans can record from analog audio input, some have even an integrated microphone. They have fun, they can play and it's entirely their own thing. On the other side there's no corporation wanting their attention to fill their head with cornflakes ads. And then you give them Bitpunk.fm cassettes to listen to some good music (e.g. Deepologic) and they also learn about Bitcoin and analog encoding and a lot of other stuff. If you don't have the cassettes, you can even make them from the digital version yourself! Just start a v4v player like fountain, press record and flip the tape when the time comes.
