1/3 I agree with Vitalik's point: if you restrict the set of coalition-level deviations the principal has to defend against, the principal’s problem gets easier.
My question: can the restriction can be made strong enough to do the work we want from it without making the agents useless?
Useful agents cannot be informationally isolated. They need models of the world, public signals, shared data, evaluators, tools, intermediaries, and other sources of context. But once agents inhabit overlapping information environments, restricting direct communication does not eliminate coordination capacity: common signals and shared context can themselves support tacit coordination.
That creates a basic tension. The more we isolate agents to suppress tacit coordination, the less informed (and therefore less useful) they become. But once we give them enough shared context to be useful, we reopen informational pathways for coordination without explicit communication. The same information environment that enables useful action can also make tacitly coordinated deviations practically available.
So perhaps the harder problem is not simply whether agents can communicate, but where the enforcement boundary falls within the broader information environment?
That is not giving up on collusion resistance, but instead asking how to achieve it given informational interdependence.
It's possible that a killer app of adversarial governance mechanism design theory will end up being AI safety.
Compare:
vitalik.eth.limo/general/202…
aiprospects.substack.com/p/p…
There's a deep duality between the two environments. Both are about a less-sophisticated principal trying to get ideal outcomes from a set of more-sophisticated agents: in the first case, the principal is a static algorithm and the agents are humans, in the second case, the principal is humans plus weaker LLMs and the agents are stronger LLMs.
A key finding was that you can achieve much better outcomes if you can guarantee limits to how much agents can collude (see: Nash equilibria being abundant, vs. cooperative-game-theory "cores" often being empty). That argument should naturally transfer to this new setting.

Since AI x crypto agents seem poised to take over the world, I’m throwing this *draft* into the wild for public comment, critique, and ridicule:
🚀 Community Currencies: The Price of Attention & Cost of Influence ---or--- 💡 The Price of Entry & Cost of Exit
This paper is a culmination of my thoughts on networked governance, risk, and decentralized identity that hopes to resolve the tensions and contradictions we face in the digital age: money/voting, public/private, democratic/corporate, capture/overreach, voice/exit.
Meaningful feedback and contributions will be acknowledged in the final version! All errors are my own. (And special thanks to the Idena community for giving a model to chew on and improve).

One related point is that giving tokens away for free is not the only "form factor" that makes sense for this: you can also do discounted sales.
I talk about reasons why to do this here:
vitalik.eth.limo/general/202…
Depending on the degree of membership/contribution you can prove, you can buy a corresponding number of tokens at a reduced price. This helps make the supply more distributed and rewards non-financial contributors, while still ensuring buyers have "skin in the game".
Any technique that works for airdrops also works for discounts. A related concept (CT @pujaohlhaver @IdenaNetwork) is to subsidize savings rates for smaller accounts as an alternative to UBI. Singapore's CPF already does something similar.

@pujaohlhaver gave a banger. She goes over her study that shows even when you have proof-of-personhood (single vote per person), you still have capture. I love the end where she says we need to actually make groups and stand up for something.

This important paper offers a fascinating case study on the evolution of Idena's approach to online proof of personhood. Most crucially, it underlines the reality that proof of personhood will never truly achieve its goals without strong resistance to coercion and collusion.

Just finished reading this new outstanding paper on Proof of Personhood and why the required solutions are a lot more nuanced than just filtering humans vs bots. Will write up a summary thread soon.
