Incident Update - Oct 13th, 2026
Ledger is asking resellers and distributors in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong to suspend sales of Ledger devices while the investigation is ongoing. This includes taking products off the shelves.
Specifically the countries are: Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Hong Kong.
To be clear, as the investigation continues, the only confirmed incidents remain contained to Southeast Asia. We have not verified a drain linked to a device bought elsewhere.
The investigation is ongoing to determine who tampered with these devices and where in the distribution chain it happened. The Ledger Donjon will analyze the devices it receives, and Ledger Customer Support will provide guidance to users who reach out through our official channel: support.ledger.com.
We understand this is concerning, and will continue to provide updates from the Ledger Donjon as the investigation progresses. Stay vigilant.
We have no indication that Ledger's infrastructure, systems or services or direct sales channel have been compromised.

A few words given the recent exploits on hardware signing devices:
• The Ledger supply chain attack represents one of the most sophisticated attacks thus far on the wallet ecosystem. In many ways it’s a lot more sophisticated than the Coldcard RNG exploit, because that one was software only. This one took a cross-border company buyout, tampering with the devices (implanting an eSIM, an LTE module and a CPU) and manufacturing the implants at scale.
• These sorts of attacks have been predicted by early Bitcoiners, but in Bitcoin they remained theoretical or crude until this year. It shows that the level of sophistication of attacks has risen quickly, and what was previously “good enough” advice on wallets and self-custody is no longer sufficient.
• When we started Nunchuk a few years ago, our premise was that multisig, and multi-vendor multisig, needs to become the standard for self-custody in the future. But even we didn’t expect how fast it would materialize. This is likely due to 2 factors: Bitcoin getting more mainstream, and the rise of AI-assisted attacks. This is a Sputnik moment for Bitcoin self-custody. The defenses need to level up.
• Passphrases wouldn’t have helped in the Ledger case, since you are required to enter the passphrase into the device for it to sign any transactions. A compromised device that phones home the seed phrase can also easily phone home the passphrase the moment you enter it.
• Similarly, generating the private key somewhere else (even by rolling dice) and subsequently importing it onto a tampered device wouldn’t save you here. The device can phone home the seed phrase the moment it’s imported.
• Anti-tampering techniques might help, such as transparent casing or bricking the device if it’s tampered with. Or forever displaying a message once the seal is broken. Or using on-device encryption between the internal hardware components. But a dedicated and resourceful enough attacker can still find ways to get around these layers. Tampering and anti-tampering have long been a cat-and-mouse game. In 2008, card readers doctored right off a Chinese production line sent card data and PINs over mobile networks to Pakistan. The Ledger attack is the same playbook, 18 years later. The bigger the target, the more attackers spend on overcoming the defenses.
• You should order directly from the vendors as much as possible, using a PO box for privacy.
• Any setup that relies on a single hardware/software stack or a single vendor should be considered at risk.
• Building your own hardware signers from generic parts is a good option for technical users.
• Multi-vendor multisig should become the standard. Each signer should have a completely independent hardware/software stack from the other signers. The point is that there shouldn’t be any single-point-of-failure anywhere in your setup.
• Many advanced protocols rely on timelocks and the recovery path being a simple singlesig. The recent attacks and exploits should highlight how dangerous this could be. Timelocks simply delay a risk. If a seed is compromised and there’s a timelock involved, the attacker just needs to wait out the timelock. (For Miniscript wallets, there’s the wallet descriptor too, but presumably it also gets sent to the device at some point.) Vault-like protocols face a similar problem: any withdrawal or recovery path that relies on a single key is a potential single point of failure.
• For our on-chain timelock-assisted wallets, in a few weeks we are adding the option to customize the recovery path to be an M-of-N, so that, if you want, spending would require multiple keys at all points during the wallet’s lifetime.

Left to right: e-SIM, CPU with firmware able to recognize Ledger's font as shown on screen and capture words as they appear on screen, and a LTE module that can connect once the seed has been fully captured.

Ledger theft, day two. Since yesterday the thief has pushed ether through Tornado Cash three times, and each time on into Zcash's shielded pool. We followed every lot out the far side. Here is how, step by step.
1. THE SAME BUILD, THREE TIMES
An ether wallet pays a fresh splitter. The splitter pays four fresh wallets. The four drop it into Tornado Cash's 100, 10 and 1 ETH pools. Minutes, every time.
Run 1, yesterday 15:17: 1,254 ETH. Run 2, today 09:42: 1,291 ETH. Run 3, today 11:56: 450 ETH from 0xfa4EaBB840A33C156E600311433AE261CBfCb0e2, in the pools by 12:15.
2. OUT OF TORNADO CASH
The mixer breaks the link between a deposit and a withdrawal. We do not need the link. Our tooling fingerprints the withdrawal transactions themselves: how each one is constructed, who constructs it, and when.
Yesterday's 65 withdrawals (1,084 ETH) and today's 96 (1,726 ETH) all carry the same signature. The six other withdrawals from those pools in today's windows do not. Run 3 came out from 12:18 into 0x0d697aa182801566d87adc86e68e95fd3b2f5f82 (213 ETH) and 0x676b16cc18542f37d202a1a79ac05463395496a4 (122 ETH), and 195 ETH of it was inside a cross-chain swap service by 12:38. Forty-two minutes, end to end.
3. INTO ZCASH, AND OUT AGAIN
The swap service turns the ether into shielded ZEC, where sender, amount and recipient vanish. But the service's own shielding of each lot is public, and from it we derive a value signature for that lot's exit, then scan every transparent exit from the pool. 108 of 108 exits across both days match their lot to the zatoshi. Not one other exit from the pool does.
First lot today: in at 10:18:18, out at 11:06:16 in block 3512847 (8d26a9b095d4d28373527f7a6eb81a3be7f906d1e2190960c0512ff64f369418 and 738c6d1261e79766e4dd16bdbd38dced91b8e3a86ce41dcda83eda1f19208fbf), straight into a ZEC to USDC order.
Today so far: 20 lots ordered (2,379 ZEC, $2.9m), 14 out, 5 inside the pool, 1 still settling. Every exit feeds a ZEC to USDC order paying two wallets born at 11:11, 22 of the 28 paid by 12:43:
0x816D5Ee17DB1495d1409F135b98FF3edc5F3cDf8: 940,561 USDC
0xBA736A4b616e79867B6d586293966b552883f3F3: 852,258 USDC
1.79m USDC, unspent. @Circle can freeze it.

FORMER CRYPTOBILIS OWNERS BREAK SILENCE ON LEDGER SUPPLY CHAIN ATTACK
CryptoBilis co-founders Arravind Prabu and Vimalatheethan have issued an official statement distancing themselves from the company’s current operations following reports of compromised Ledger devices.
According to the statement:
• CryptoBilis was acquired by new ownership earlier this year.
• Both founders stepped down and completed the operational handover in March 2026.
• Neither has had access to customer databases, order histories, backend systems, or administrative accounts since the handover.
• The acquisition agreement prohibited a joint public announcement until mid-October 2026, although suppliers had reportedly been informed of the ownership change.
• Both founders offered to provide Ledger with historical information to assist its investigation.
The statement identifies Nicholas Chang as the current person in charge of CryptoBilis.
The revelations raise further questions about the reseller’s ownership transition and the timeline of the suspected Ledger supply chain attack.

Situation Update: Ledger can confirm that one of the impacted users’ devices contained an unauthorized hardware implant. Ledger is reaching out to impacted users as part of the ongoing investigation. If you have information regarding the investigation, please reach out to Ledger’s bounty program: [email protected]. As a measure of precaution CryptoBilis confirmed it has ceased sales of all hardware wallet inventory until the investigation is concluded. Ledger is in active communication with CryptoBilis on next steps.
Ledger is working with the appropriate authorities to bring the bad actors to justice, and thanks @SEAL_911 for their collaborative support on the investigation. We have no indication that Ledger’s security infrastructure, systems or services have been compromised. As a reminder, Ledger recommends users who purchased a Ledger device from this reseller to not initiate set up if they have not yet done so. If you have set up your Ledger device, consider moving assets to a new Ledger signer (with a new seed).
Security is a constantly evolving landscape; Ledger is continuously adding security mitigations and is working on further, enhanced anti-tampering solutions.

Ledger is investigating reports of loss of funds from users in South East Asia who purchased products from a reseller named CryptoBillis. As a precaution, and pending the results of our investigation, we have asked CryptoBilis to pause all sales and shipments of Ledger devices. We recommend Ledger users who purchased from this reseller in the last 90 days to not initiate set up if you have not done so yet. If you have set up your Ledger device, consider moving assets to a new Ledger signer (with new seed). We will continue to inform customers of updates as the investigation progresses.
