Rockwell published nine security advisories in a single week. Siemens followed with nine more, seven landing on the same day and four rated critical. Schneider Electric patched a 9.2 in the Modicon M580. AVEVA disclosed a hardcoded encryption key in its pipeline monitoring software.
For OT vendors, that’s September patch volume.
For a two-person security team, it’s 18+ advisories to investigate, map against what’s actually running, prioritize, and act on.
Tools can flag the CVE. Someone still has to decide what actually needs attention first.
AI is making it faster to build the attack. It isn’t making the attack harder to spot if you know what belongs in the environment.
A laptop that has never talked to a PLC suddenly opening a session on port 102. Activity outside a maintenance window. A connection that technically works, but has no reason to be there.
That’s where security still comes down to context. Tools surface the activity. Experienced analysts determine whether it belongs.
As attackers automate more of their side, that human judgment matters even more.

If everyone on your security team approaches a problem the same way, you’re going to miss things.

Excited to announce that I’ll be speaking at the Midwest Reliability Organization for the @NRECANews Security Conference this week, representing both @LeargasSecurity and @criticalpathsec!
Over the next two days, I'll cover two key topics: incident response and mental health in cybersecurity.
In an industry that demands resilience, it's essential we also prioritize sustainable practices to prevent burnout.
Looking forward to sharing insights and learning from the best.
