Even if US AI labs agreed to slow down, China has no incentive to follow suit. The race is geopolitical now, and under Trump, an OPEC-style AI oligopoly is practically impossible.
These labs are private companies competing for technological supremacy, while governments would be trying to regulate a technology they barely understand.
Neither side can afford to trust the other to hit the brakes.

The race is no longer just about building smarter models. It’s about who gets to compound intelligence into power first.
And in a race where slowing down means falling behind, acceleration becomes the only rational strategy, even if collectively it might be the most dangerous one.
