One phrase. Every chain. The D'CENT drain started as an XRP story. It isn't one anymore. About 12.4M XRP was taken from 7,393 wallets between September 15 and 25. D'CENT's own disclosure now names Bitcoin, Ethereum and TRON as affected too, and at least one user lost XLM. The wallets were tied to older versions of D'CENT's mobile app. How the keys were exposed still hasn't been fully disclosed. The spread itself isn't surprising. A multichain wallet runs every network off one recovery phrase. Expose the phrase, and everything built on it is exposed with it. Our preliminary review of the phishing mail that was sent out to our newsletter subscribers about an hour ago found that it is very likely that our newsletter provider got compromised. Multiple other Bitcoin companies got targeted as well, and it appears that we all share the same newsletter provider. We sent out a phishing warning to all our newsletter subscribers, contacted the provider and reported the phishing domains. Most of the phishing links appear to have been taken down already. We are still actively investigating this situation and will update you once we know more.

This is horrifying. We talk a lot about protecting private keys from hackers. But self-custody has another threat model: physical attacks. Don’t broadcast your holdings. Don’t make your identity easy to connect to your wallets. Don’t put all your assets in one obvious place. Your security model should protect you, not just your keys.
