This year's Fire Prevention Week theme is “Charge into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging is a Superpower.” Rechargeable devices are part of everyday life. Phones, laptops, power tools, toys, e-bikes and scooters often rely on lithium-ion batteries. These batteries store a lot of energy in a small space and can become a fire risk if damaged or charged improperly. Choose a safe spot to charge your devices. Charge devices on a hard, flat surface where heat can escape. Never charge on beds, couches, pillows or other soft surfaces, and keep devices away from anything that can burn. Make safe charging your superpower all year long and visit fpw.org/ to learn more.

Town of Castle Rock Parks and Recreation has again earned national accreditation, reaffirming its commitment to thoughtful planning, responsible stewardship and quality services for residents. The Parks and Recreation Department received reaccreditation through the National Recreation and Park Association's Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies. CAPRA is the only national accreditation program for parks and recreation agencies. The department demonstrated compliance with 154 nationally recognized standards related to the management and administration of parks, open space, trails, facilities, programs, safety and services. The reaccreditation process, required every five years, includes a detailed self-assessment, a comprehensive review of supporting documentation and an on-site evaluation by trained CAPRA peer reviewers. “CAPRA reaccreditation gives our community confidence that the parks, facilities, programs and services they enjoy are backed by strong, efficient and accountable operations,” said Parks and Recreation Director Jeff Brauer. “Maintaining accreditation takes a tremendous commitment from staff across the department to continually evaluate our work against national best practices, look for ways to improve and use community resources responsibly. That work happens behind the scenes, but residents experience the results every day.” That commitment guides the department’s work as it stewards the recently opened Lost Canyon Ranch Open Space and constructs the Castle Rock Sports Center. The team also manages 25 parks, more than 104 miles of trails and more than 4,000 acres of open space, along with recreation facilities, programs, athletics, aquatics, golf and community events. First accredited in 2015 and reaccredited in 2020, Castle Rock Parks and Recreation is one of only 232 CAPRA-accredited agencies nationwide and 13 in Colorado. It is also one of just two accredited Colorado agencies to have twice received a National Gold Medal Award from NRPA for excellence in parks and recreation management. The Town of Castle Rock has completed the Crowfoot Valley Road widening project on budget and on schedule, delivering safety and traffic flow improvements between Knobcone Drive and Macanta Boulevard. Work began in summer 2025 and wrapped up this month. Crowfoot Valley Road is a significant roadway that connects the northeastern portions of Castle Rock, Douglas County and Interstate 25. The need for improvements on this road was identified in the 2017 Castle Rock Transportation Master Plan and was the product of multiple meetings and open houses with area residents. Improvements were focused on improving reliability of trip times, reduced vehicle delays and improved safety for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. Several improvements were incorporated based on community input including taller medians where possible, and narrower travel lanes which have proven to reduce vehicle speeds compared to standard width lanes. Key features of the completed project include: ▪️ A traffic signal at Sapphire Pointe Boulevard ▪️ Two through lanes in each direction ▪️ Dedicated left- and right-turn lanes at intersections where warranted ▪️ Medians and narrower lanes to encourage slower speeds ▪️ Sidewalk installation ▪️ On-street bike lanes The project also included the reconstruction of existing asphalt pavements in poor condition and the rehabilitation of the existing sanitary sewer system. This project is a collaborative effort between the Town of Castle Rock and Douglas County. The project's construction cost is approximately $8.7 million, with Douglas County contributing $1.5 million. A portion of the County’s contribution supported design phase expenses. Road projects in Town are primarily funded with revenue from new development impact fees and taxes on construction materials. Read the full news release: crgov.com/m/newsflash/home/d…
